The principles are simple. Lightweight body. Front-mounted engine. Rear-wheel drive. Great balance and handling. This philosophy was behind influential driverfocused Toyota models such as the 2000GT and AE86. These automotive icons fed the imagination of Toyota’s engineers, and ensured that the GT86 has the perfect blend of pedigree and performance. “Toyota’s new sports car appeals to your head as well as your heart.” Auto Express home previous next index show menu print zoom in zoom out save help Book a Test Drive Your Dealer Sign up to our Newsletter Drive With the low centre of gravity, the driver is now in touch with the road again. Technology is brilliant – the solution to many challenges. But high-tech driver aids can disconnect us from the skill and emotion of driving. With its front-mounted, free-revving petrol engine driving the rear wheels, the GT86 gives control back to the driver. The result? A car that’s responsive, nimble and beautifully balanced. You’re back in the driving seat. “When you have rear drive, you have balance. You have a division of labour. The front wheels do the steering. The ones at the back do the propulsion.” Top Gear Magazine home previous next index show menu print zoom in zoom out save help Book a Test Drive Your Dealer Sign up to our Newsletter Re-ignite your passion for driving. Performance Engine 2.0 200 Every engineer and designer behind the GT86 is passionate about driving and knows that performance is not just about power and top speed. They set the powertrain and driving position as low and as far back as possible, for near-perfect weight distribution. The GT86’s core ingredients of light weight, low centre of gravity and a precise power-to-weight ratio connects the driver to the road in a way that brute power simply doesn’t understand. From the beginning, the concept was to put the driver back at the heart of the sports car. The essence of a sports car is driver control. The GT86 has been engineered for that purpose – not through horsepower and computer technology but by classic driving dynamics and design. It’s not just on the road where the GT86 shows impressive control, but also at the driver’s fingertips with the Toyota Touch™ multimedia system. The touch screen controls the six-speaker audio system, and enables Bluetooth® connectivity for phone connection and music streaming, plus aux-in and USB port. The Red Interior pack, inset, includes red steering wheel inserts, gear shift, handbrake and door handle inserts. This pack comes as standard if you choose the optional black leather/red Alcantara® or cloth trims. 2. 1. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning – GT86 is equipped with a dual-zone automatic air conditioning system to maintain a comfortable cabin temperature. 3. 6-speed manual transmission – The newly developed short shift stroke delivers responsive and smooth gear changes. The gear ratio has also been optimised to combine driving and environmental performance. TRD’s roots go way back to the 1950s when a team of specialist technicians began customising Toyota production cars for motor sports events. More than 60 years of continuous innovation later, you’ll find both road and race Toyotas fitted with TRD components, with many of the race cars competing at the front of the grid. Reflecting that never-ending passion for high performance, all the knowledge and skills of preparing Toyota cars for the circuits is encapsulated in today’s GT86 TRD. Each meticulously designed part draws on proven racing expertise to enhance the GT86 experience and add to the sensation of pure driving pleasure. TRD first entered international motor sports with an individually prepared Toyota Crown RS for the Around Australia Trial rally in 1957. Subsequent developments with Coronas, Publicas and the 2000GT in the 1960s secured the reputation for racing expertise. In 1970, TRD fitted a 3-litre V8 from a Toyota Century into the much smaller Toyota Crown Hardtop and began an association with stock car racing that continues today with Toyota Camrys regularly competing in the American NASCAR series. The 1980s also saw the launch of the now legendary TRDprepared Corolla AE86 in Japan. And in the UK the AE86 won back-to-back BTCC titles at the hands of Chris Hodgetts. 1960s 1970s 1980s 2000 GT / Suzuka 1000 km home previous Celica Turbo / Fuji 1000 km next index show menu Touring car championship and GT races were held in tandem with Group A and C events at meetings during the 1990s. In addition to the Supra, TRD-prepared MR2s, MR-Ss, Truenos and Celicas regularly picked up the laurels. The GT86 GRMN 86 is one of two GT86 racing cars which took part in the Nürburgring 24-hour endurance race in Germany in May 2012 where it won the SP3 production car category. High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights HID headlights use less energy and are more than twice as bright as conventional halogen bulbs. This provides a safer night-time drive, especially in poor weather. These distinctive headlights are equipped with an automatic beam-levelling control to reduce glare. Traction Control (TRC) If you accelerate too hard and cause the drive wheels to lose grip and begin spinning, TRC will automatically reduce engine power and control brake force to help restore traction. Whiplash Injury Lessening (WIL) seats During an impact at lower speeds and particularly from the rear, WIL seats and headrests cushion the head and back. This reduces the risk of whiplash injuries. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) ABS prevents the wheels from locking while braking. EBD complements this by optimising brake force distribution between each wheel to compensate for different loads. Together the two systems help you to maintain steering control when braking heavily. Pre-tensioners and force-limiters Integral to the front 3-point ELR seat belts, pretensioners and force-limiters are designed to help avoid injuries to the chest area. Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) VSC automatically activates each individual brake as needed and controls engine output to help maintain stability and prevent skidding when turning sharply or cornering on slippery road surfaces. Connected Services Toyota Touch & Go™ allows access to a selection of on-board internet-based services, harnessing the power of your mobile phone. Search for a restaurant, check local fuel prices, weather info, or that elusive parking space – all from your car. To take advantage of these features your mobile phone will need to be compatible with Toyota Touch & Go™, have a suitable data plan, and tethering-enabled. Contact your phone provider for more details. Further applications are coming soon, downloadable from toyota.co.uk and may incur an extra cost. Brake Assist (BA) If you attempt an emergency stop, BA will detect this and apply additional brake pressure. This enables ABS to work to its maximum potential. Smart Entry & Start System (Driver, passenger and boot) Instead of a conventional key, the Smart Entry & Start System features a transmitter that allows you to unlock the doors by pulling the handle and lock them again by pressing a button. To start or stop the engine, simply press the Start/Stop button.
