When 13 Toyota LandCruisers were imported into Australia to lend a hand with the Snowy Mountains scheme. No-one knew it then, but it was the beginning of an important relationship between a country and a carmaker that would not only grow in size and intimacy every year, but break record after record - selling millions of cars, and employing thousands of Australians. Calling Australia home. The first Toyota was sold here the following year. And within 5 years we’d gone from simply selling cars in Australia, to building them too. And while you might never have heard of the first car we brought off that production line - the Toyota Tiara - for us, it was the beginning of a whole new chapter in our history. Today, some 45 years later, the world has changed a lot. But Toyota’s commitment here in Australia remains as strong as ever. Since 2002, we’ve invested more than $1 billion in the development of our manufacturing facilities in Australia including the introduction of new models. This state-of-the-art facility has allowed us to build cars with an unprecedented level of quality - and to build more of them for our loyal drivers. In fact, in 2008 we produced more cars than we ever have before - and also saw the 2.5 millionth Australian-built Toyota roll off the production line. Driving for a brighter future. Aurion’s journey began with a simple, but seemingly contradictory question - could we design an efficient, yet powerful, large V6 car built for Australia - but with no trade-off in performance or attention to detail? Inspired by Toyota’s rich motorsport pedigree, Aurion’s 3.5L V6 is a powerhouse of intelligence and technical prowess, delivering 200kW, while with a fuel economy rating of just 9.9L/100km* it easily meets the toughest Euro IV emissions standards. POWERED BY AUSTRALIAN INGENUITY. Both extreme and diverse, Australian road conditions are among the toughest on Earth. So, with Aurion, conventional thinking was thrown out the window. Toyota’s Australian designers and engineers were determined to build a vehicle adapted to our unique conditions, from city driving to interstate exploring - all offering the same exhilarating driving experience. The Aurion’s Australian heritage also meant it could be specially tuned for our road conditions. The suspension was designed to cope with just about any surface - while retaining breathtaking comfort and stability. Toyota’s Australian engineers questioned the traditional design cues of the conventional Big Aussie 6, and considered real-world driving conditions that Aurion drivers were likely to encounter. Why compromise on comfort by designing for conditions that most of us will never face? Aurion’s Australian engineers were equally determined to design a vehicle that felt as good to drive, as it was to look at. A true performer in all conditions. TUNED IN TO YOU. The Aurion’s suspension platform is multi-layered. And it works beautifully with the intelligent 6-speed sequential automatic transmission. Up front, MacPherson struts ensure a consistent downward force for enhanced grip. A uniquely tuned stabiliser bar minimises body roll, and the rear suspension boasts an independent Chapman strut. Underneath the Aurion’s muscular exterior we’ve included some of Toyota’s most advanced performance driving technologies. Still, we haven’t loaded the car up with superfluous ‘extras’ you’ll never use - everything has been considered, refined and designed to ensure a seamless blend of comfort and performance. Together, we call these Driver Assist Technology (DAT). DAT uses robust, computer-based intelligence to enhance handling in a variety of conditions. For example, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) actively detects and controls skidding while cornering, using an array of sensors, actuators and computer data to act within milliseconds. VSC brakes wheels on an individual basis to help bring the vehicle back under control, and/or automatically adjust power when needed. Traction Control (TRC) also kicks in to minimise vehicle slippage - while maintaining steering precision and acceleration control. HI-TECH, NATURALLY. The Optitron Combi-meter instrument panel is crystal clear at just the slightest glance, with a heightened visual contrast between the meter itself, and the meter readings. Prodigy, Presara and Sportivo models take technology even further, with a Multi-Information Display that also provides data on outside temperature, fuel range, average fuel consumption, driving time and average speed. Toyota has never been a company satisfied with mediocrity. We pioneer. And never have we taken that pioneering spirit more seriously, than when it comes to safety. Internationally, Toyota has chosen to go beyond complying with current safety standards instead setting our own benchmarks. Called the ‘Global Outstanding Assessment’ program, it seeks to set new standards of safety for all our cars. HARD OUTSIDE. SOFT INSIDE. The results of all that research and development are obvious in Aurion. From the highly rigid frame of the car - made out of special high strength steel, to strategically placed components that absorb collision impact before it reaches the occupants, Aurion has been built to protect. And while you never want to think about worst-case scenarios, it’s reassuring to know that Toyota has. Standard in every Aurion is a passive safety system of six SRS airbags. In the front, 2-stage front impact airbags deploy in relation to the severity of the crash; and front mounted side airbags soften side impacts. In the event of a side impact, curtain airbags will deploy to shield passengers. Even the seats and seatbelts have been designed to minimise the effects of an impact, holding you tight to reduce whiplash. STRAIGHT AROUND TROUBLE. The key to safety though, is avoiding accidents in the first place. Aurion’s threefold Active Braking with intelligence (AB-i) system, incorporating Anti-skid Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA) ensures you not only stop more quickly, you also stay in control when it really counts. brake force, Brake Assist is there to supplement your own. It senses quick, heavy braking and automatically applies the full force - so you stop in the shortest possible space - whether you hit the brakes as hard as possible or not. EBD gives the maximum brake force to the wheels with the most grip - so if you need to swerve as you’re braking, or have weight in the back - EBD automatically adjusts the brake force to give you the most control. ABS prevents the wheels from locking up when you brake heavily, by rapidly ‘pulsing’ each brake caliper independently. And that means you don’t skid - so you stop more quickly, and can still steer around a potential accident.
