This is why the LS leverages unconventional design inspirations—from musical instruments to origami to paper lanterns—and handcrafted elements that are virtually unheard of in the world of automobile manufacturing. With its delicately etched pattern and luminous glow, available Kiriko glass is designed by hand to catch the eye and light. Then a laser-scanning technique creates data from ten thousand different cuts in order to capture the uniqueness of this human touch. Each piece of glass requires up to 147 points of polishing, which can take up to two hours to complete. In the end, the eight specialized takumi masters overseeing the eight different processes achieved their goal—for the glass to continuously transform its appearance as the angle of the sun and light conditions change. Simple yet painstakingly crafted, this masterful trim started as true origami and took four years to develop. To achieve the delicate interplay of light and shadow, designers first created the pattern with traditional Japanese paper. The final expression is so complex and precise that it can only be folded by human hands. With fluid, delicate lines reminiscent of the traditional Japanese harp (koto), the dash accents of the LS are made of magnesium because of its unique tactile qualities. The manufacturing process requires several layers of surface treatment in order to create its distinct feel and dynamic appearance. 19 AM B I ENT LI GHTI N G Inspired by the warm glow of traditional Japanese andon lanterns and the welcoming spirit of omotenashi, soft LED illumination warmly invites the driver and passengers into the cabin. And light sources behind the armrest and door trim give the impression that the armrest is elegantly floating, adding to the serene atmosphere. Like nothing else in an automobile, or in nature itself, it’s created by a takumi craftsman slicing multiple sheets of wood across the grain and applying a natural gloss to enhance the vibrancy. Available Art Wood Herringbone trim involves the same process used to craft top-quality musical instruments. By aligning the lines of the dash horizontally, the LS helps to deliver vehicle information more easily because of the reduced vertical eye movement required by the driver. Options shown 50 51 PE ACE O F M I N D, STAN DARD Introducing Lexus Safety System+ 2.0, an integrated suite of class-leading standard active safety equipment.3,27 PRE-COLLISION SYSTEM WITH PEDESTRIAN DETECTION By enhancing the radar and camera capabilities, it’s now possible for the system28 to help detect not only the vehicle ahead, but also a preceding bicyclist in daytime and even a preceding pedestrian in daytime and low-light conditions.29 Should it detect a potential frontal collision, it can help automatically brake the vehicle to a stop. LANE TRACING ASSIST When All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control30 is enabled, this hands-on system31 monitors visible lane markings or the path of the preceding vehicle to help the driver keep their vehicle centered in the lane by providing steering assistance. Designed for added convenience and to help reduce driver strain, the system can even be used in traffic and on highways with gradual curves. LANE DEPARTURE ALERT WITH STEERING ASSIST This system32 utilizes a camera to monitor visible lane markings. If an inadvertent lane departure, or potential departure due to swaying, is detected at speeds above 32 mph, the system is designed to warn you so that you can steer back into the lane, and can even take slight corrective measures to help keep you within your visibly marked lane. ROAD SIGN ASSIST This system33 uses a built-in camera to help provide road sign information in the instrument panel or even on the available Head-Up Display. In addition to displaying speed limit information, the system can alert you of Do Not Enter, Yield, and Stop signs you otherwise might have missed. ALL-SPEED DYNAMIC RADAR CRUISE CONTROL This system30 uses radar and camera technology to help you maintain a preset speed and following distance from the vehicle ahead. Whether at highway speeds or in stop-and-go traffic, the system is designed to detect if you get closer than the preset distance and automatically slow your vehicle—even to a complete stop. If driving at highway speeds and the road ahead clears, your Lexus returns to its preset speed. INTELLIGENT HIGH BEAMS To help provide greater visibility for you as well as other drivers, Intelligent High Beams4 offer added illumination to help keep you focused on the road. When the road ahead is clear, the system defaults to high-beam mode, then temporarily switches to low beams when it detects the headlamps or taillamps of vehicles ahead.
