The available Lexus Parking Assist Monitor anounces visibility when reversing, as the high-performance Mark Levinson® audio system upholds the Lexus tradition of delivering premium quality sound. After creating the luxury SUV segment with the original rx300, Lexus will once again radically change this segment with its all-new Lexus rx equipped with an advanced hybrid powertain. While the strengths of current hybrid vehicles include low emissions and high fuel economy, this new hybrid technology adds the benefit of outstanding performance. The car will be available on the market within two years. After setting the standards in customer satisfaction for more than a decade in the American market, recent J.D. Power surveys conducted in Germany and UK prove that Lexus is also striving for a unique ownership experience in Europe through unparalleled levels of quality. many customers traditionally consider replacing their vehicles” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “This perception of long-term dependability translates into both higher resale values and repeat sales. In an increasingly competitive market, Lexus sales in 2002 remained strong at 21,000 units, close to our 2001 record of 22,199.” “This strong base of loyal customers and our new models give us a stable basis for further growth. In terms of volume and acceptance, many more people are now aware of Lexus. Now, in addition to our traditional values of world-leading refinement, performance and quality, we have a range of dynamic vehicles which also bring passion and innovation to the Lexus brand. This will create even more satisfied Lexus customers.” The extensive list of J.D. Power awards won by Lexus since its inception is available on the next page. J.D. Power customer satisfaction study in UK proclaims Lexus as the top brand for the second year running. After questioning car owner’s about their vehicles’ quality/reliability, appeal, cost of ownership and service satisfaction, Lexus scored 860 points, a staggering advantage to other luxury car brands. For the first time, J.D. Power & Associates conducted a similar survey in Germany in 2002. However, the final results were consistent with other markets’. A Lexus vehicle, is200, once again appears at the top of the ranking as the most praised automobile by German drivers. “We’re very proud that the recent J. D. The Geneva Motor Show marks the European première of the new Lexus rx300. The new generation improves on every aspect of the outgoing model, of which more than half a million units were sold. The new rx300 has additionally made a quantum leap in safety, driving dynamics and refinement to move it even further ahead of other vehicles in the luxury sport utility segment. In contrast to the rx330, unveiled for the North American market at the 2003 Detroit Auto Show, the new rx300 meets the different requirements for Europe by retaining a 3-litre engine capacity, with attendant benefits in fuel efficiency and emissions. The power of the transversely-mounted high-performance V6 engine of the original model is increased to 150kW (204 DIN hp) by refinement of the intake and exhaust systems. To complement the new engine refinements, modifications were also introduced to the transmission: a new five-speed automatic transmission with a sequential gearchange and a new driveline in which the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is controlled electronically by the Traction Control (TRC). A more aerodynamic body and higher-performance tyres increases the top speed from 180 to 200km/h, while improving combined fuel consumption from 13.0l/100km for the original rx, to 12.2l/100km, a best in class figure for luxury SUVs equipped with 6-cylinder petrol engines. In addition, this powerplant already complies with the 2005 EURO IV emission standards. Lexus 9 Mr. Yukihiro Okane, Chief engineer of the next generation rx300 says: “We concentrated on making the new Lexus rx300 a vehicle which has excellent dynamic performance, especially in handling and ride comfort, NVH and braking. We determined at the outset that the new rx300 must have advanced styling, an unsurpassed level of safety equipment and a host of innovative features.” the rx300’s dynamic performance. The front end of the new generation rx300 is marked with a powerful bulging bonnet line dipping in a wing-shape around the grille to the combined front bumper and aerodynamic fairing. The rear end styling is enhanced by a distinctive hexagonal rear window shape, combined with an integral rear spoiler and rear lamps which use the latest LED (light emitting diode) technology rather than traditional filament bulbs. These are both more energy efficient - adding 1 percent to fuel economy – and a significant active safety item. The LED elements light up ten times faster than a conventional lamp, 2 to 15 milliseconds as opposed to 150 to 200ms. This equates to 6 metres of reaction time at 100km/h. Original, attractive interior design Styled for a ‘dynamic & high performance image’ The new Lexus rx300 is set to change all preconceptions of how a SUV should look. It is distinguished from its predecessor by bold new looks, which combine the most advanced elements of SUV styling with a sporting and dynamic image. The rx300 shares styling cues with other Lexus models such as the is SportCross, in particular in its distinctive ‘c-post’ rear pillar design. The front grille and headlights reinforce this family feel and prolong the identity of the current model. The combination of intelligent packaging with a modern and distinctive shape gives a passenger compartment that is bigger and roomier than most of its segment rivals. At 4740mm in length, the new Lexus rx300 is 160mm longer than its predecessor and 35mm wider, with refined packaging giving an extra 100mm of wheelbase for additional luggage room length. Despite the greater length, the turning circle remains at a compact 5.7m. The familiar Lexus grille is combined with further Lexus styling cues, including modern, clear glass lamps front and rear, strong wheel arches and a rising window line. Large 18-inch five-spoke alloy wheels give the car visual weight while the raked A-pillar and forward slant to the C-pillar create a sense of urgency, matching 10 “The new interior design must have originality and attractions suitable for the new breed of SUV buyer” says Mr. Okane. “The interior concept reflects the dynamic style of the exterior.” As well as the customary standards of Lexus comfort, ambience, practicality and luxury, the rx300 combines the latest contemporary design with the highest quality materials. The interior design is sporty but spacious, solid but luxurious, in a light and roomy cabin trimmed with a choice of three colours which match the ivory, black or light grey leather seats. The main instrument cluster in front of the driver is housed in a distinctive three pod design with a central speedometer, flanked by tachometer and a multi-function display showing fuel contents, engine temperature and gear selection. The dashboard features a distinctive brushed ‘cool metal’ surround on each side of the centre console, containing the climate and audio controls and a 7-inch screen for vehicles equipped with satellite navigation system and reverse guidance display. For those who wish to specify, an 11-speaker premium audio system is offered based on Lexus’ unique collaboration with the world’s most exclusive maker of home audio systems, Mark Levinson®. Lexus 11 On selected equipment packages, a premium illumination scheme covers door handles, centre console, footwell and scuff plates, conveying a sophistication flavour to the interior. The central ‘cool metal’ trim is complemented by curved light wood in the lower console containing the selector lever for the sequential automatic transmission, and as highlights on the steering wheel, door trims and on the centre console box between the front seats. The adjustable console box can either slide forward to give a feeling of continuity with the centre console, or backwards to allow a ‘walkthrough’ between the front seats. A new approach to convenience The rear seats match those in the front, being designed as separate entities with a padded central area, to highlight an ‘independent four seat’ approach (on selected models). Each rear seat is adjustable fore and aft by 120mm and can be reclined, to allow all passengers to travel luxury class, whatever the road conditions. The padded central area additionally folds down to create a combined armrest and storage box, with two ‘XL’ size cupholders complementing the three for front-seat passengers. The centre armrest also accesses a ‘ski hatch’ allowing longer objects to be carried between the rear seats, while both rear seats fold forward to add practicality to rx300’s style. In order to set a difference to other luxury SUVs, the rear tailgate is power operated, automatically opening and closing at the touch of a button. It can also be activated at distance by the vehicle’s key. To ensure a safe operation, the system features a warning buzzer and touch sensors stop the door when there is any obstruction to its closing movement. To further aid convenience, the tonneau-type luggage bay cover is automatically retracted as the tailgate opens. Hidden underfloor storage compartments are also accessible in the luggage bay, by simply clicking down on their pop-up lids. 12 Revolutionising safety in the SUV segment The new Lexus rx300 will also have a positive impact to the safety level of the SUVs to come by setting an integral approach through a vast range of innovative technologies in both active and passive safety. Uppermost are the excellent driving dynamics, aided still further by Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist technology, but additionally the new rx300 carries more safety equipment than any other vehicle in its segment. Intelligent AFS, Adaptive Front-lighting System is one of the several safety features available in the new Lexus rx and radically improves night-driving visibility when cornering. For the first time in an SUV, Intelligent AFS uses an electronic controller to calculate from the vehicle speed and steering angle, the optimum swivel of the lighting area for better visibility while cornering. Unlike earlier systems which were merely linked to a car’s steering, the Intelligent AFS controller controls the lighting direction independently and is combined with Xenon headlights with an automatic leveling system for optimum night-time vision. Vehicles equipped with Xenon headlights also feature headlamp cleaners. An automatic rain sensing windscreen wiper system and a timed spray windscreen wash system ensure the best possible visibility in poor weather. This is further aided by the use of water-repellent glass, which is specially coated to maintain clear vision through the front side windows. A further aid to active safety is the use of a Lexus Parking Assist Monitor, effectively a TV camera mounted in the rear, a unique feature among luxury SUVs. When reverse gear is selected, an image appears on the navigation display screen on the rx300 dashboard, allow accurate manoeuvring and minimising the risk of collision with low-level objects. The original rx300 remains one of the best-performing sport-utility vehicles in terms of passive safety performance, as confirmed by crash-tests conducted by independent organisations in the United States, like IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety). Lexus 13 Lexus engineers have ensured that the new model protects its occupants even more thoroughly. Standard equipment includes multi-stage driver and front passenger SRS airbags. Inflation pressure will vary according to information gathered from the seat position sensor, crash severity sensor and seatbelt buckle switch. Standard side curtain shield airbags offer supplemental head protection for occupants in side impacts. At the rear, a dual-link strut suspension system is used in combination with a new, more rigid rear axle design. Parallel to this, coils and shock absorbers feature a new layout, engineered to achieve a flatter ride. Both front and rear suspension systems are further complemented by ‘high reaction’ shock absorber developments to achieve high response and high damping force at small amplitudes. The side protection is further enhanced by the large-sized ThoraxAbdomen-Pelvis side airbags. This airbag features a capacity of 13 litres, compared with 10 litres for the conventional side airbags. For this reason, it can reduce the risk of chest and abdomen injuries by spreading the forces over a wider area. In addition, a new 4-wheel air suspension offers a still higher level of performance and refinement. This optional feature provides greater ride control together with an auto-leveling function, plus four additional modes to alter ride height through a range of 55mm. Injuries to the legs, common in major frontal impacts are likely to be significantly reduced by the rx300’s provision of a SRS knee airbag for the driver, for the first time in the segment. The purpose of SRS knee airbag adoption is to reduce injury from contact with steering column and lower dashboard structures, but they have also been found to reduce head and chest injuries by reducing the pelvis displacement and rotation of the torso in a major impact. The overall structural strength of the new rx300 also plays a significant part in protecting its occupants. Over 80 cars were crash tested, achieving optimal results in impacts far greater than the mandatory crash test requirements. Dynamic performance in all conditions The new rx300 has added engaging dynamics to the expected Lexus refinement in any circumstance. This is aided by the exceptional rigidity of the new body structure while an improved front McPherson Strut suspension system includes a new coil spring geometry, which gives greater lateral force control, allowing better control and a smoother ride. Revised suspension bushes complement an upgraded power steering system, to create a linear vehicle movement during initial steering input, resulting in improved cornering and steering response. 14 The ‘Lo’ mode lowers vehicle height by 15mm for better handling, while ‘High’ mode raises vehicle height by 30mm for off-road capability in case of emergencies. Above 100km/h the air suspension automatically lowers the vehicle by 7.5mm to provide superior high-speed stability. When the ignition is turned off, the new rx300 can assume ‘Access’ mode by pressing a button, lowering vehicle height by 25mm, to aid easier access or exit by the driver and passengers. 235/55R18 high performance tyres are standard on most models, carried on stylish 18-inch diameter five-spoke alloy wheels. In addition to enhancing driver feedback and cornering performance, these larger wheels enable the increase of front brake disc size to 319mm, while an increase in front brake piston size and reduction of brake pedal stroke ensures more linear and powerful braking performance. This is further enhanced by the use of Brake Assist. A key feature of this particular system is that the timing and degree of braking assistance is designed to maximise emergency stopping performance, yet ensure that the driver does not discern anything unusual about the braking operation. It is combined with VSC (vehicle stability control), which monitors the vehicle's behaviour during cornering and maintains vehicle stability by correcting oversteer or understeer. Lexus 15 Dynamism with refinement The new rx300 uses a development of the transversely-mounted high-performance 3-litre V6 engine of the original model. Power is increased from 148kW (201 DIN hp) to 150kW (204 DIN hp) by refinement of the intake and exhaust systems. This figure is classleading among competitors with 6-cylinder, 3-litre petrol engines. A combination of these engine refinements with a more aerodynamic body and higher-performance tyres increases the top speed from 180 to 200km/h. A new five-speed automatic transmission is used for the first time. In addition to offering additional driver appeal with a sequential gearchange, motorway fuel economy is also improved as a result; from 13.0l/100km for the original rx, to 12.2l/100km for the new model. Thanks to this, the new Lexus rx300 also complies with EURO IV emission regulations. The new 5-speed automatic gearbox is combined with an all-new driveline in which the torque distribution between the front and rear wheels is controlled electronically by the Traction Control (TRC), rather than the previous mechanical control by viscous limited-slip differential. The new TRC system provides more precise control, providing smooth traction even when the throttle pedal is used roughly. The improved engine and drivetrain set new standards in refinement, even beyond the class leading standards set by the origina rx300. One key to this is the straightening of both the exhaust system and the driveline routes under the car, to minimise resonance and vibration. As a principle source of vibration is under hard acceleration, the front section of the driveline is actually canted forward by 2 degrees to allow it to assume the optimum straight line under load. This attention to detail is matched by similar refinements in structure and sound deadening to ensure that – as you’d expect of a Lexus - wind and road noise levels are the lowest in the class, establishing a change to the typical levels of noise and vibration attributed to SUVs. 16 The new generation rx300 has been developed with the use of the Maibara wind tunnel, which was also used for the development of the Shinkansen Bullet Train and is capable of generating wind speeds up to 400km/h. The wind tunnel’s very low background noise allows Lexus to concentrate on the reduction of wind noise to all-time low levels. Computational Fluid Dynamics research was also used, with areas such as the positioning of the parked windscreen wipers and the shaping of the A-pillars being refined to reduce wind noise by an average of 5dB in all frequencies. “The development team strived in improving the new rx300’s performance in the areas of high frequency noise, idling booming noise, vibration and wind noise. As a result, passengers can enjoy a relaxed drive at cruise speeds and an absence of noise and vibration at idling stop. However, the excellent NV performance of the Lexus rx300 will not deter its driver from enjoying superior driving pleasure.” said Chief Engineer Okane. “The new rx combines this with Advanced Styling, Dynamic Performance, Safety Equipment and some outstanding features – that is how it should be for the new Lexus rx300.” Building on a heritage of success Almost a decade after Lexus first moved into the largest car market in the world; in 1999, Lexus first offered in the USA a distinct sport utility vehicle (SUV). Typically, it redefined the marketplace. The rx300, which offered the commanding ride height and off-road functionality of a sport-utility vehicle without sacrificing the comfortable ride, handling and conveniences of a luxury car, became a runaway success establishing an all-new segment in the market on both sides of the Atlantic. The rx300 is the best-selling luxury SUV in America, beating both established Lexus 17 domestic and imported brands. This created increased awareness of the brand to a wider audience, driving sales of the full range of models. Lexus became the Number One-selling luxury brand in the United States, outpacing Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, Lincoln, Cadillac and all other luxury competitors. The system is highly modular and different size motors and engines can be combined to favour either fuel economy or power or both. With over half a million of the original rx300 model sold, the new model known as the rx330 in the USA, has already received rave reviews following its unveiling at the North American International Auto Show in January 2003. The new rx300, which will go on sale in Europe from May is confidently expected to meet similar acclaim. “The new rx300 is another example of the innovation which makes Lexus one of the most exciting brands in Europe” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “The original rx300 has not only been one of the best selling Lexus models, it redefined the luxury SUV market sector. The entire Lexus range is being continually refined, with typical Lexus attention to fine detail. Each new generation adds another new dimension to the Lexus brand. We are sure that the dynamic new rx300 will gain many more satisfied Lexus customers.” Hybrid version to revolutionise SUV segment For the first time in the world of luxury cars, Lexus will include a hybrid vehicle in its model offer, which will mark a totally new approach in this market. A special version of the Lexus rx will be equipped with a new hybrid system and will be available to our customers within two years. Featuring a ultra-efficient V6 petrol engine at the front and two electric motors to power front and rear wheels, the new system will set the difference to current hybrid systems by providing thrilling performance with an outstanding fuel efficiency. This system will give the V6 engine the power and torque of a V8, but returning emissions levels and fuel efficiency which are much closer to a compact car than a conventional SUV. 18 Lexus 19 Specifications rx300 Engine Engine code Valve mechanism Engine layout Displacement (cm3) Bore x stroke (mm) Compression ratio Max. power (DIN hp) kW/rpm Max. torque (Nm/rpm) Emissions level 1MZ-FE 4-valve per cylinder; DOHC; VVT-i V6 2,995 87.5 x 83.0 10.5±0.2 (204)150@5600 283 Nm@4500rpm EURO IV Suspension Front Rear Additional features McPherson strut type McPherson strut type 4-wheel air suspension available Brakes Front Rear Additional features Ventilated discs (Ø 319 mm) Solid discs (Ø 288 mm) ABS EBD – Electronic Brake-force Distribution BAS – Brake Assist VSC - Vehicle Stability Control Steering Type Ratio Turns (lock to lock) Minimum turning radius - tyre (m) Rack and pinion, power-assisted 16.0 : 1 3.0 5.7 Tyres and wheels Wheel type Tyre size Alloy, 18-inch (standard on most versions) 235/55 R 18 (standard on most versions) Lexus 21 rx300 Exterior measurements Overall length (mm) Overall width (mm) Overall height (mm) Wheelbase (mm) Tread front (mm) Tread rear (mm) Overhang front (mm) Overhang rear (mm) 4,740 1,845 1,675 (coil susp.) 1,665 –25 / +30 (4-wheel air suspension) 2,720 1,580 1,570 (1,560 for air suspension) 980 1,040 Performance 0-100km/h (sec) 0-400m (sec) Max. speed (km/h) 9.0 16.5 200 12.2 9.4 16.9 CO2 emissions* (g/km) Combined Extra urban Urban * According to 93/116/EEC • Lexus is200 gains option of ‘cross-over’ styling, combining dynamic performance with five-door versatility while aluminium tailgate and high torsional rigidity ensures optimum handling. • All is Sedan and SportCross models feature enhanced body rigidity, revised front and rear suspension geometry, lighter weight, and new suspension mounts. • is300 range features 3-litre, 213 DIN hp, straight-six VVT-i engine with five-speed automatic transmission and E-shift, a steering wheel-mounted, push button gearchange system. • is200 range utilises 2-litre, straight-six VVT-i engine, developing 155DIN hp and 195Nm of torque. The is200 SportCross maintains the level of performance for which the Lexus is200 with a top speed of 215km/h and a 0-100km/h acceleration time of 9.5 seconds, combined with the versatility of a compact station wagon. The exterior design resembles a sleek coupe and features a wide tailgate, useful for loading larger objects. The tailgate door is entirely made of aluminium making it easier to operate, but also maintaining the optimum front/rear weight distribution, which with careful body design to maintain a similar torsional rigidity to the saloon, ensures similar levels of handling agility, one of the is series’ attributes, which has made it the European best-seller for Lexus since its introduction in 1999. Subtle aerodynamic revisions allow the achievement of an exceptionally low co-efficient of drag (CD) of 0.29 for improved 22 Lexus 25 fuel consumption at speed and also actively utilise the airflow to contribute both to straightline stability and during high-speed cornering. A key to this is careful control both of underbody and underbonnet aerodynamics. Several underfloor parts are now used, carefully shaped to allow the cleanest possible underbody airflow, assisted by tyre fairings fitted just ahead of the front and rear wheels, which control airflow around the tyres. Further airflow enhancements include the rounding of the front bumper bottom and engine cover lip, which result in both smoother airflow and reduced drag. The new grille design also features a dramatically reduced aperture to further control underbonnet airflow. While the grille itself remains the same size, 80% of its openings are now sealed to reduce turbulence and drag. Lexus is – the sportiest approach to a prestige sedan or wagon From its introduction, the Lexus is200 successfully challenged the best compact sedans in Europe, to create a new standard in the D-segment, one of the most competitive market places in the industry. Over the past four years approximately 35,000 customers across Europe have enjoyed the unique and exciting driving experience that is delivered by the is range. The model continues to redefine both value and quality in the segment, in 2002 the is200 became the top-ranked model in the first-ever Customer Satisfaction Index study carried out in Germany by J. D. Power and Associates. The range was further enhanced in 2001 by the introduction of the larger capacity is300 and the revolutionary is300 SportCross. Extending the engine capacity from two litres to three for the is300, boosted power from 155 DIN hp to 213 DIN hp and maximum torque from 195 to 288Nm. Matched to the legendary is chassis, the Lexus is300 emphatically regains for enthusiastic drivers, the feeling that the driver, not the electronics system, is in control. 26 0-100km/h acceleration is achieved in approximately 8 seconds, compared with 9.5 for the 2-litre car, yet the combined fuel consumption remains at a highly reasonable 10.8l/100km. Individual design with a strong personality A careful glance at the is exterior design highlights adjectives like dynamic, solid and muscular. A prime reason for this is the short body overhang, which also contributes to better handling by reducing the yaw moment of inertia. The SportCross shares the same floorpan and dimensions as the is200 and is300 four-door sedans, but with an overall length of 4505mm and a wheelbase of 2670mm. The sharply wedged silhouette commences with a powerful bulging bonnet line dipping sharply down towards the grille, emphasising the dynamic overall shape and significantly improving air flow over the body. The familiar Lexus grille is combined with angled headlamps with double-independent beams, low slung air-dam and built-in fog lamps to add to the sports effect and create aerodynamic efficiency. Strong wheel arches, a low body line and the modern, clear glass lamps front and rear contain further Lexus styling cues. While the main body panels are identical as far back as the rear doors, from the C-post back, the SportCross features a unique coupe-like outline enhanced by the use of fully-integrated rear combination lamps which carry the characteristic Lexus circular structural motif. Sporty handling and comfortable ride in the same package A series of detail structural and chassis enhancements further improve on the goals attained at the beginning of the Lexus is development project. The is has to provide excellent handling for driver enjoyment, but should also display a comfortable ride, even on the worst surfaces, without displaying the harshness which is common to many performance cars. Lexus 27 The key to this is class-leading structural integrity and torsional rigidity of the bodyshell, further enhanced in the latest is models by the computer-aided redesign and stiffening of critical areas of the structure such as front suspension cross-beams, rear suspension towers and body pillars. One third of the body structure is now built of high-tensile steel, further enhancing rigidity and reducing weight. The double wishbone suspension both at front and rear is designed to suppress front diving during hard braking and the rear suspension fine-tuned to optimise the vehicle’s centre of gravity during cornering. The Lexus is uses the brake discs from the bigger Lexus gs300 to achieve a braking performance suited to the most demanding driver. The braking performance is enhanced through the use of a larger master cylinder diameter to further improve brake pedal feel and the addition of a latest-generation ABS, working together with EBD (Electronic Brakeforce Distribution) and Brake Assist. A final touch of style on the latest is models are newly-styled 16-inch and 17-inch aluminium wheels (according to the equipment package) with large-dimension tyres. A Torsen limited-slip differential and a Traction Control (TRC) system prevent wheelspin, making sure all the power is properly converted into performance. Besides the advanced suspension and braking system, the Lexus is features also Vehicle Stability Control (VSC, on is300 as standard equipment). The system will help the driver regain control of the vehicle after heavy oversteer or understeer, making it safer to explore the car’s limits. (Electronic Throttle Control System – intelligent) and ACIS (Acoustic Control Induction System). The first is a by-wire accelerator which can provide a quicker engine response or better smoothness, according to the driver’s intentions. ACIS can vary the intake manifold length in order to improve torque on low and mid range, improving also engine smoothness. Driver control on the Lexus is300 is further enhanced with the standard use of a 5-speed automatic transmission with an ‘E-shift’ push-button, sequential gear-change system. With the floor shift lever engaged in the ‘M’ position, buttons mounted on the steering wheel allow drivers to manually change gear, without moving their hands from the steering wheel. is200 is offered with a slick-shifting 6-speed manual transmission. This gearbox can extract the most out of the straight six engine, or alternatively buyers can choose the 4-speed automatic ECT gearbox. This transmission has a flex-lockup system for better fuel efficiency and two different programs: SNOW and POWER. The first provides extra-smooth acceleration for a quicker progression on slippery surfaces; the second provides a sportier feeling by making gear changes on the engine speed redline. Interior form and function combined The Lexus is interior styling reflects the distinctive style of the exterior. It is sporty but spacious and has been subtly upgraded with the use of ‘soft-touch’ materials on the dashboard surface. The aim was to ensure the fun-to-drive feel, but driver and passengers alike will equally appreciate the seats’ comfort and the light and roomy cabin. Chassis and powertrain in perfect harmony The driver appeal of both is200 and is300 models is ensured by their powertrains. Both engines feature 4-valve per cylinder and are equipped with VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing – intelligent). This system provides better torque through low and mid engine speed range and also better fuel efficiency. The engines also use ETCS-i 28 Figure hugging sports seats; a 3-spoke, leather steering wheel and an excellent driving position come as standard. The seats are designed to offer maximum driver and passenger comfort for long distance touring yet also provide plenty of support during performance driving. Lexus 29 Dominating the instrument panel is the innovative chronograph style speedometer and tachometer cluster, the graphics of which have been subtly altered to further enhance their style and ease of reading. Minor gauges within the combined cluster include an instantaneous fuel consumption reading, engine temperature, battery indicator, fuel gauge and a gear-shift indicator. Europe. “From its launch, the Lexus is200 brought passion and excitement, and has made many more people aware of Lexus. Across Europe close to 35,000 people have bought an is model and for the majority it was their first taste of the Lexus ownership experience. By its success, the is has increased the number of sales per dealer, increasing their viability, their numbers and our development of an even better geographical dealer coverage. That allows Lexus to offer better than ever, the standards of accessibility and service that our customers require.” A full climate control air conditioning system is standard equipment on all models. As is remote control central double locking, electric power windows all round, with one-touch control and jam-protection for the driver’s side are standard equipment. So are heated, electrically folding exterior mirrors, front fog lamps, illuminated vanity mirrors and a passenger seat belt warning. The 6-speaker audio system is fully integrated into the sweeping centre console for easy access and includes an in-dash 6-disc CD changer. The Lexus is SportCross interior features rear seats designed to fold in a 60/40% split to further enhance load carrying capacity. This allows up to three people to be carried while extending the length of the available load space to 1670mm. The front passenger seat back can also be folded forward, allowing it to be used as a table when parked and extending the available load length to an astonishing 2600mm. To allow three passengers to be safely carried in the back of the SportCross, full lap and diagonal harness are provided for all passengers, with the centre seat belt retractor built into the roof to allow for optimum convenience. When two rear seat passengers are being carried, a central armrest, similar to the Sedan, can be deployed. Both the left and right side rear seats, like the Sedan, comply with ISOFIX child seat requirements. “The is series is in terms of volume the most important car in our European range” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus 30 Lexus 31 Specifications is200 Engine Sedan/SportCross Engine code Valve mechanism Engine layout Displacement (cm3) Bore x stroke (mm) Compression ratio Max. power (DIN hp) kW/rpm Max. torque (Nm/rpm) 1G-FE 4-valve per cylinder; The ls430 combines a more dynamic exterior profile with increased efficiency. A wheelbase lengthened 75mm, increases interior space, but overall length remains the same at 4995mm. The overall height was also raised to gain interior space, yet the ls430 achieves a coefficient of drag (Cd) of 0.25, the lowest of any current passenger car. This unprecedented aerodynamic efficiency virtually eliminates wind noise, making the ls430 even quieter inside than its benchmark predecessor. In addition, the ultra-low Cd helps keep fuel consumption at similar levels - even with the increased engine displacement and performance. The quad-cam, 32-valve, 4.3-litre V8 in the ls430 develops 281 DIN hp at 5,600 rpm and 417Nm of torque at 3,500 rpm. Mated to a computer-controlled five-speed automatic transmission, it powers the Lexus flagship from 0-100 km/h in just 6.7 seconds. Lexus engine management systems are among the most sophisticated available, controlling fuel injection and ignition timing to thousands of a second. Combined with intelligent Variable Valve Lexus 47 Timing (VVT-i), the 4.3-litre V8 gives remarkable efficiency, low exhaust emissions and low fuel consumption. It also ensures unrivalled tractability and smoothness. The Lexus ls430 also introduced the industry's first “torqueactivated” powertrain control, which governs the throttle based not just on pedal position, but also on vehicle speed and engine rpm. A Super ECT (Electronically Controlled Transmission) five speed, intelligent automatic gearbox which can adapt its gear shift pattern to suit driving style and road conditions is also linked to the computerised engine management system, to momentarily reduce torque for even smoother gear changes. The latest chassis developments give the driver of the ls430 the highest levels of confidence and stability in all road conditions. At the same time the new Lexus ls430 achieves a serenely quiet and comfortable ride. Improved packaging of the overall design gives a well-balanced front/rear weight distribution of 51/49% and a tighter turning radius of 5.2m for easier manoeuvring, while the lower unsprung weight of aluminium alloy suspension components additionally aids ride and handling. Electronically modulated air suspension, is available as an option on the Lexus ls430. The system was the first in the world to utilise the non-linear H∞ control method, to control the damping of the air suspension and realise world-leading stability and ride quality. The system is also automatically lowered at high speeds to improve stability and aerodynamic properties. This generates a reduction in the coefficient of drag (Cd) from 0.26 to 0.25, the lowest of any passenger car. advantage of the newly-developed packaging. High-quality woodgrain panelling, featuring walnut and birds-eye grain, is extensively used on panel trims and door cappings, with the choice of genuinely fine materials and the precise fit and finish emphasising Lexus craftsmanship. The interior cabin of the Lexus ls430 is much more than one of the most luxurious environments on four wheels. It is also one of the safest. The ls430 features a rigid passenger cell protected by front and rear crumple zone structures, further enhanced by the latest generation Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) technology. Extensive use is made of high-tensile steel in the body structure to reduce weight and further enhance efficiency. The body was also carefully designed to maximise the size of impact-absorbing crumple zones in the front and rear as well as incorporating substantial side impact protection bars in the doors. “The Lexus ls430 stands for ‘Probably the Best Car in the World’. The one thing that probably defines it best is its technology, combined with a more dynamic driving capability and luxury” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “ls430 has standard equipment that no other competitor model can offer. It demonstrates engineering excellence in every component”. In building the new ls430, Lexus used a supercomputer to digitalise the precise surface design of the body. The new Lexus sc430, the first-ever cabriolet model from the marque, continues to add ‘must have’ passion to the pursuit of perfection for which Lexus is noted. Sales in 2002 more than doubled from 717 in 2001, to over 1600 – yet nonetheless the model is receiving a series of detail improvements as a part of the ‘relentless pursuit of perfection’ which is Lexus. The most desireable car of the Lexus range was designed from the outset to be the world’s finest all-round luxury cabriolet, with an integrated all-metal retractable roof offering the ‘best of both worlds’, combining open-air driving pleasure with Lexus standards of comfort and refinement. sc430 also combines the highest levels of performance and world-leading refinement and efficiency from its 286 DIN hp, 4.3-litre V8 engine and five-speed automatic transmission. An exceptional torque figure of 419Nm at just 3500 rpm, results in a 0-100km/h acceleration of only 6.4 seconds. From day one of the design of sc430, Lexus designers from Europe and Japan worked together to create a unique design, inspired by products such as high-performance luxury yachts, reflected in both the avant-garde exterior and the sophisticated interior styling of the sc430. Refinements to seat design are also intended to enhance driving pleasure as well as the Lexus sense of luxury and of passive safety. The front seats are comfortable, enhanced by the use of ultra-soft leather. The rear seats also offer form-fitting comfort and soft leather trim creating a relaxing, stylish and opulent interior. The design of the upper seat back is set deeper, to better absorb the upper back of the occupant, while the headrest is positioned to reduce the backward movement of the head and reduce loads to the neck. The optimum seating position is further ensured by a microcomputer-controlled memory function for the 8-way adjustment of the driver’s and front passenger seats, while power lumbar supports are fitted as standard equipment and optional seat heaters can be fitted to maintain seat temperature at between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius. These features enhance the sc430’s stylish interior which offers a multitude of convenience features. Easy-to-read analogue gauges, an optional navigation system, a premium audio system which can be upgraded to a genuine Mark Levinson® unit. The Mark Levinson® audio system features a 440W low distortion power amplifier and nine custom-designed Mark Levinson® speakers, linked to an LW/MW/FM radio system, cassette and CD player with 6-CD auto changer mounted in the head unit. An optional Lexus navigation system features a DVD which is capable of storing map information for the whole western Europe and which allows for faster access and route calculation. 56 A common characteristic in all of these products is a painstaking attention to detail. On the move with the roof down, the sc430 continues to maintain the customary standards of Lexus refinement and comfort, thanks to the use of computer generated “wind-wrap” analysis to carefully control the airflow around the passenger compartment. An air deflector placed between the rear seat headrests assists this and further ensures comfort during high-speed, roof-down cruising. The sc430 also features one of the world’s most advanced climate control systems that allows occupants to enjoy more top-down driving time, even with cold weather. When the roof is up, it constantly monitors outside temperature, cabin temperature and sunlight intensity. With this information it is able to calculate the optimum heater outlet temperature, airflow speed and outlet mode necessary to achieve the pre-selected cabin temperature. When the top is down, the circulation of warm air is directly increased in line with driving speed, keeping a comfortable temperature around the cabin area. A unique Lap-jet heater outlet is also featured. This functions only when the roof is lowered and prevents cold air from building up in the lap area. A further sign of the painstaking Lexus attention to detail are the rear view mirrors which respond to the amount of ambient light to prevent glare as necessary. Both inside and outside mirrors have continuously variable electronic anti-glare controls, as opposed to other electronic mirrors which merely adjust through a limited range of adjustments in fixed steps. Lexus 57 The mirrors work from two sensors mounted on the interior mirror. In daytime, the mirrors operate on ‘day’ mode just like conventional mirrors with 70% reflection ratios. As ambient light levels fall, one sensor detects ambient light and distinguishes between day and night. At the same time the sensors detect the difference between ambient light and a brighter light coming from the rear. In response the interior mirror adjusts the reflection ratio from 7% to 70%, while the outer mirrors adjust their reflection ratios between 12% and 50%. A final convenience feature of the mirrors, day or night, is that whenever the gearshift lever is moved into reverse, the door mirrors automatically tilt down to give a better view of the road behind. It is a feature typical of Lexus attention to detail. seat airbag that selects the opening speed in function of the level of impact, front side airbags, front seat belt pretensioner and force limiters ensure the highest possible standards of occupant protection. “We have traditionally made some of the best-built, most refined cars in the world. The Lexus sc430 is without doubt one of the greatest, most desirable, driving experiences too” says Stuart McCullough, Director of Lexus Europe. “The sc430 is an icon of our brand. It therefore has to be the best and offer the finest experience. Our recent upgrades show that we are committed as always to the relentless pursuit of perfection.” While the mirrors ensure a clear view behind, the maintenance of a clear view ahead in all weathers is maintained with equally typical efficiency. To ensure the optimum performance, the rubber wiper blades are coated with graphite. This ensures smoother operation and longer life. Wet-weather visibility is further enhanced by three-hole windshield washer nozzles with washer liquid volume and spray pattern refined to maximise wiper performance. At the front of the sc430, the unique headlamp design offers as standard, projector-style Xenon lamps with low beams. Careful development has allowed a 5 lux beam projection distance onto the road surface of over 100m. Since safety is paramount at Lexus, the new sc430 takes advantage of several advanced technologies. The cabriolet uses a braking system featuring a four-channel ABS, Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Traction Control, Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Brake Assist and a low Tyre Pressure Warning System (TPWS). EBD monitors all four wheels during braking and varies brake pressure according to the load on each wheel. Passive safety is as comprehensively addressed as on every Lexus model.
