Crawl Control System: Rear Cross Traffic Alert: Climate Concierge: Laser Screw Welding: Crawl Control allows the driver to take the foot off the pedals and just steer while the vehicle smoothly climbs its way up difficult ground. The system is much more innovative than a typical cruise control function. It monitors each tyre’s condition and negotiates extreme terrain. The system then detects too much acceleration, or not enough acceleration, for the ground situation beneath the wheels. It then applies an appropriate mix of braking, engine power, and torque adjustments to help keep the wheels rolling at the optimum speeds to minimize slippage. Without deactivating the system, the driver can at any time reduce speed by braking, or increase speed via a speed-selector switch. Backing out of a parking space at right angles to the road can often be a challenge – especially when the driver's view on the traffic passing at right angles behind his/her own vehicle is blocked by obstacles. Rear cross traffic alert can make backing out of parking spaces easier. The system utilizes two mid-range radar sensors in the rear of the vehicle. They measure and interpret the distance, speed and anticipated driving path of vehicles detected in cross traffic. When vehicles crossing to the left or right behind the driver’s vehicle are detected, the function issues an audible and/or visual warning to alert the driver to the impending risk of collision. At the push of the start button, it automatically monitors the temperature of four separate climate zones and adjusts not just the fans, but also the temperature of the seats and steering wheel individually so that each zone achieves its preferred level of comfort as quickly as possible. In order to build a highly rigid body while minimizing weight, there’s an extensive use of body adhesive bonding and laser screw welding. By using adhesive to join body panels over a larger area, engineers were able to make significant improvements to body rigidity. For instance the new IS uses 25 meters (82 feet) of bonding throughout the body.
