The newest CLS engine enlists a team of technological advances to elevate both performance and efficiency. The compact, lightweight 3.0‑liter V‑6 employs twin turbochargers and high-pressure Direct Injection to generate more power output from less fuel input. Its highly precise fuel injectors atomize gasoline into an ultrafine spray. Its innovative rapid-multispark ignition can fire each spark plug up to four times per cycle, within a single millisecond. It all adds up to 329 hp, 354 lb‑ft of peak torque, and 0 to 60 in 5.5 seconds.2 And it does all that with certified ultralow emissions and up to 30 highway mpg.3 CLS 550 biturbo V‑8. From its massive power and torque to its unmistakable growl, there’s still nothing that satisfies like a V‑8. With highly advanced Direct Injection and multispark ignition, the biturbo V‑8 puts out 402 hp — along with 443 lb‑ft of torque that’s 100% on tap starting at just 1,600 rpm. Acceleration response is immediate from any speed, with 0–60 mph taking just 5.1 seconds. And yet the CLS 550 can return up to 26 mpg on the highway, accompanied by an ultralow-emission V‑8 serenade from its dual polished chrome exhaust tips. To the nines. Having pioneered both the driver-adaptive automatic transmission and the first 7‑speed, Mercedes-Benz engineers raise the ante again. Standard in the rear-wheel-drive CLS 550, a new 9‑speed automatic offers a wider range of ratios, for faster takeoffs and quieter cruising. Shifting is quicker and smoother, and it’s even lighter and more efficient than the well-proven and widely praised 7‑speed in the CLS 400 and CLS 550 4matic. And with either transmission, you can select and change gears without taking a hand from the steering wheel, thanks to an elegantly intuitive electronic selector and sporty shift paddles. you tailor the automatic shift patterns to fit your driving mood of the moment. At any time, a tap of the paddles offers instant manual control of gear changes. Automatic shifting resumes after a few seconds of paddle inactivity, though the intelligent system knows to hold the gear in corners and on inclines. A pushbutton Manual mode is included with the Wheel Package. It’ll remain engaged until you select one of the other programs again. Multiple modes. Either transmission’s pushbutton Sport and ECO programs let Surer footwork. For added confidence in any season, 4matic® all-wheel drive is optional on the CLS 400 and CLS 550. The 7‑speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT® MCT transmission offers three drive programs. In its paddle-shifted Manual mode, it can execute an upshift in 100 milliseconds, and precisely rev-match every downshift. Best of all wheels: A true breakthrough in power delivery, AMG Performance 4matic® all-wheel drive features a 33:67 front/rear torque split. While you drive, a set of multitasking cameras continuously captures a rapid series of images of the environment in front of the car. Using high-speed algorithms, these virtual eyes recognize other vehicles and pedestrians, and anticipate their movement, helping the various systems of Intelligent Drive respond instantly as they’re needed. Available DISTRONIC PLUS® adaptive cruise control uses radar to adapt your set speed in response to the flow of traffic ahead. It can automatically slow down — or even brake to a halt — until your path clears, then resume with just a tap. As you cruise, its Steering Assist feature uses the cameras to help keep you centered in your lane, even in gentle curves.6 If sensors detect cross-traffic or recognize pedestrians in your path, an alert sounds. The instant you apply the brakes, it can precisely boost braking pressure to the ideal level. And if you fail to heed the alert for a vehicle or pedestrian, it can automatically initiate full braking, to help prevent an impact or reduce its severity.7 Pedestrian Recognition takes action: 1. Cameras and radar detect pedestrian. 2. Audible warnings alert driver to urgently apply the brakes. 3. If driver brakes, BAS® PLUS instantly increases braking to level needed. 4. If the driver doesn’t initiate braking, PRE-SAFE® Brake does automatically. Mercedes -Benz Intelligent Drive. Leading with LEDs. The CLS employs brilliantly efficient LED technology for virtually all of its exterior lighting, from its full-LED headlamps to its taillamps. The available new ACTIVE MULTIBEAM LED® headlamps maximize illumination without causing glare for other drivers. They shift their beams into curves, and precisely adapt their high beams based on continuous camera scanning. They can also help brighten low-speed turns into dark driveways, alleys or garages. Multilane multitaskers. Two optional systems make highway driving easier. Blind Spot Assist can alert you to some unseen vehicles in the adjacent lane.8 And Lane Keeping Assist can vibrate the steering wheel if you start to drift across visible lane markings.9 For both systems, optional active technology can help guide the car back into its lane if you disregard the alerts. Active Lane Keeping Assist can even help detect an overtaking vehicle in the next lane. 5. Earlier or autonomous braking helps to prevent a collision or reduce its severity. Active steering guidelines help you back smoothly into a parking space. The optional Surround View System uses four cameras to create a single live “birsdeye” view of your immediate surroundings. It helps you maneuver more easily in tight spaces, whether you’re moving forward or backing up.10 Radar-based autonomous braking. When you’re driving above 5 mph, new COLLISION PREVENTION ASSIST PLUS uses multirange radar to monitor your speed and distance to the vehicle ahead. If it senses that a collision is likely, it alerts you to brake. As soon as you do, its Adaptive Brake Assist can automatically increase braking to the ideal level.7 And in certain situations, it can apply the brakes autonomously if you do not respond to the alert.11 Action when danger is behind you. Part of the Driver Assistance Package, PRE-SAFE® PLUS uses radar to sense a possible rear-end collision before it occurs. It if senses you’re about to be hit from behind, it can tighten the front seat belts. If you’re already stopped, it can firmly apply the brakes to help minimize whiplash injuries. It can also hold the brakes after impact, to help prevent a secondary collision even if the driver’s foot slips off the brake.7 6. With a collision averted, driver and pedestrian continue on their way. Standard on the CLS 400 is the new Garmin® MAP PILOT. Cleverly packaged on an SD card, it precisely depicts streets and buildings in 3D, and can show photorealistic views of upcoming intersections. The available12 COMAND® navigation system features an 80GB hard drive, and crisp 3D maps with three years of map updates. A special camera and four control units adjust the output of more than 50 LEDs up to 100 times per second, to continuously adapt the headlamps to the road conditions ahead, whether you’re approaching a curve, following other vehicles, or turning into a dark driveway. Multicolor/multifunction fiber-optic LED. The distinctive, continuous arch over the headlamp serves as the bright white Daytime Running Lamp, the more softly glowing parking lamp, or the flashing amber turn signal. Day or night, its shape seamlessly flows into the signature character line in the side profile of the CLS. Active LED low-beam headlamp. Bright-white output instantly turns on at full intensity — to flood the road with illumination that helps the human eye perceive more like natural daylight. Camera-based input actively swivels the beam as you steer, improving illumination into curves. MULTIBEAM LED grid module. For exceptionally even and far-reaching brightness, the high beam is generated by 24 individually controlled LEDs in each headlamp. The camera-based Adaptive Highbeam Assist progressively varies their light distribution to illuminate the road as far ahead as possible without causing glare for other drivers. LED near-range headlamps. Three LEDs with curved reflectors provide broad illumination of the area immediately in front of the car, while adding a distinctive appearance and excellent visibility of the car at night or in poor weather. Corner-illuminating front lamp. Activated by using the turn signal or steering at low speeds, the cornering lamp focuses its LED illumination toward the side, to brighten turns into parking garages, dark driveways and alleys. It is a characteristic of their materials and design that brake noise/squeal may result, along with differing brake pedal feel at lower brake temperatures compared to higher operating temperatures. DISTRONIC PLUS® adaptive cruise control is no substitute for active driving involvement. It does not adapt cruising speed in response to stationary objects, nor does it predict the curvature and lane layout of the road ahead or the movement of vehicles ahead. It is the driver’s responsibility at all times to be attentive to traffic and road conditions, and to provide the steering, braking and other driving inputs necessary to retain control of the vehicle. Drivers are cautioned not to wait for the DISTRONIC Proximity Warning System before braking, as that may not afford sufficient time and distance to brake safely. Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake maintenance, and tire and road conditions. Blind Spot Assist may not be sufficient to avoid all accidents involving vehicles in your blind spot and does not estimate the speed of approaching vehicles. It must not be used as a sole substitute for driver awareness and checking of surrounding traffic conditions.
