GUIDE 4 ABOUT THIS GUIDE Information at hand EASY ACCESS TO PRODUCT KNOWLEDGE The new 2006 Sales Presentation Guides continue in the format introduced for 2005, based on positive feedback received from the Mercedes-Benz sales force. ORGANIZATION OF THE GUIDES The presentation of the 2006 MercedesBenz model line is divided into two groups: • Class Guides: Information on each model line, to explain the key features that distinguish one model line from the others, and from their competition. • A core Technical Guide: Information on what makes every Mercedes-Benz a Mercedes-Benz. The Class Guides dispense with repeating features that are shared by every Mercedes-Benz, for easier access to information you need. To help you find information easily, the Guides provide some basic search tools: • At the front of each Guide, a Table of Contents lists the subjects in page order. • This is followed by an Alphabetical Index of key topics. • Each Class Guide is divided into four sections: Class Overview, Exterior, Interior and Mechanical — followed by the specifications and equipment charts.  Benefits of each feature are called out in italics with a red star. • Throughout each Guide, blue-diamond callouts direct you to other sections or the Technical Guide for a consolidated discussion of features of every Mercedes: MORE INFO: TECH GUIDE | P. XX S 430 4MATIC Sedan DEPTH OF SUBSTANCE One of the greatest challenges — and rewards — of offering Mercedes-Benz products to the driving public is knowing the breadth and depth of the substance that makes a Mercedes special, and why the tagline “Unlike any other” rings true. From some 65 years of safety innovation to cutting-edge convenience features like Keyless Go, every element of a MercedesBenz is part of an intricately yet elegantly orchestrated system of features designed to work together. It’s this systematic approach that results in vehicles that truly are unlike any other in the driving pleasure, ownership experience, extreme confidence and unparalleled pride they impart. WE COULD GO ON… The biggest challenge in understanding what makes a Mercedes a Mercedes is resisting “information overload” with all the many nuances of their design. Did you know, for example, that many systems in every Mercedes communicate to each other? For example: • If a critical exterior lamp burns out, the S-Class automatically substitutes a suitable nearby lamp. • The S-Class climate control responds first to occupied seats, based on seat-belt use. • Keyless Go can sense if the driver accidentally locks the key in the trunk. (It will pop the trunk a few seconds later.) • The auto-dimming rearview mirror cancels its dimming if an interior light is switched on, to provide a better view. The truth is, we could produce Guides that are thousands of pages thick — and that few people could ever absorb. So we’ve selected the most compelling and pertinent facts about the most advanced, diverse and exciting line of Mercedes-Benz models we’ve ever presented to you and your customers. With an exciting, expanded range of new models for 2006, we hope you’ll not only benefit from this approach, we hope you’ll enjoy it, too. For 2006, the S-Class will continue to deliver the combination of thoughtful luxury features, technological sophistication, passionate styling and a graceful yet athletic driving experience that has made it the standard by which all luxury sedans are measured. MODEL HIGHLIGHTS Each model enhances the S-Class lineup: The new standard-wheelbase S 350 Sedan brings the S-Class within reach of new buyers. A 241-hp 3.7-liter V-6 and 5-speed automatic transmission are standard. For 2006, there are now six S-Class model offerings. At the entry level, a new standardwheelbase1 model, the S 350 Sedan, makes realizing S-Class ownership easier than ever, especially for shoppers who’ve traditionally felt limited to lower-line competitive models such as those from the Japanese luxury brands. The familiar long-wheelbase sedans — some four inches longer than the S 350, all in the rear legroom area — make up the remainder of the model line. The V-8 powered S 430 and S 500 offer buyers two choices in exceptional value: the technologically advanced 4MATIC™ all-wheel drive system or the stylish AMG Sport Package, either one as a no-charge option. And to enhance the exclusive luxury of the S 600, a number of formerly optional items have been made standard for 2006 (replacing the phone) on our V-12 flagship sedan. And as if the 493-hp S 55 AMG weren’t already a superlative among luxury performance sedans, it’s joined by the world’s quickest sedan,2 the 604-hp twin-turbo V-12 S 65 AMG. 1 S-Class sedans have been sold around the world in two wheelbase lengths — standard and long — since the 1960s. Prior to the introduction of the 2006 S 350, the currentgeneration S-Class has only been offered in the U.S. in the long-wheelbase version, even though these models have been called “Sedans” rather than “Long-wheelbase Sedans.” Please be aware that all S-Class models other than the S 350 share the long-wheelbase body style. 2 Based on manufacturer-published 0–60-mph acceleration, peak horsepower and peak torque of all 2005 4-door sedans sold in the U.S. 2006 competitor information not available at time of publication. The long-wheelbase S 430 and S 500 Sedans set the benchmark in the high luxury segment, with V-8 power, and the choice of the AMG Sport Package with a 7-speed automatic, or 4MATIC all-wheel drive with a 5-speed automatic, either as a no-cost option. The S 500 adds Bi-Xenon headlamps, Nappa leather and heated front seats to the S 430’s already generous roster of standard equipment. The S 55 AMG Sedan is the executive athlete, with nearly 500 supercharged V-8 horses that are also remarkably wellbehaved in around-town driving. It’s like an exotic car you can enjoy every day. The S 600 Sedan remains the exclusive automotive experience, with a liquid-smooth 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-12 producing 493 hp, cabin appointments bordering on the extravagant, and new standard luxuries. S 55 AMG Sedan The S 65 AMG Sedan, launched early 2005, is simply the most powerful and torque-rich 4-door sedan on the market,2 with more than 600 handcrafted, twin-turbocharged V-12 horsepower allowing it to out-accelerate any other sedan with effortless, seamless and seemingly endless power and poise. 2006 S-CLASS OVERVIEW 6 S-CLASS OVERVIEW Heritage The 15/70/100 Model led to the Nürburg 460 and Nürburg 500 models. an impact. Manifold fuel injection was first made available in the 300 for 1957, and it offered power steering in 1958. 1928 1961–1968 The Nürburg 460 was introduced, offering 4-wheel brakes, automatic central chassis lubrication and a choice of wheel types — with wooden or wire spokes. Engine displacement was 4,592 cc, developing either 80 or 90 hp, depending on the information source. The Nürburg 460 was available as a limousine, open touring car, cabriolet or supercharged sport-roadster. Total production of the Nürburg 460 chassis through 1933 was 2,893 units. The 300 SE (W112) introduced such safety features as the dual-circuit braking system, padded dashboard, impact protection on the steering-wheel hub, and knee-impact protection. It also had a safety cage built into the body, as well as front and rear crumple zones. Seat belts were available as an option, as were front head restraints. 1924–1933 1930–1937 The Type 770 (W07) Grosser Mercedes were large, powerful automobiles, hence the name “Grosser” (meaning grand). Only 117 units were produced, intended for heads of state. The smooth powertrain was capable of relative quickness.Weighing over 6,000 pounds, the Grosser Mercedes was powered by a 7.7-liter supercharged inline 8-cylinder engine that developed up to 200 net hp. 1951 The Type 300 and Type 220 models were introduced. These were the first entirely new post-World War II Mercedes-Benz models. The 300 was the first MercedesBenz designed with the American market taken into consideration, with more streamlined styling. These models were in production for 11 years. As it evolved, Type 300 accounted for over 11,000 units. Weighing between 3,850 and 4,400 lb, the 300 featured a 3.0-liter overhead-cam inline-6 that developed up to 160 hp and was capable of speeds up to 105 mph. It had a reputation for its high degree of engineering and quality construction. The last of the Type 300 4-door sedans, built between 1957 and 1962, were available with or without visible B- and C-pillars, or as a limousine. German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer had three 300 models, which he drove until 1967. Hence, the 300 came to be called the “Adenauer.” Its elegance made a statement about the people who drove it, especially in reconstruction Germany. It was built for the wealthy, beautiful and powerful. Among its interior features were an antiglare interior mirror, center rear armrest and four ashtrays. Exterior styling included an elegant roof, sweeping fenders and a massive radiator. It was the largest German automobile of its day. The Adenauer offered several innovations throughout its production. It had the patented Mercedes safety door latches, which protected against doors jamming in Standard and optional luxury features included power steering, sunroof, illuminated glovebox, vanity mirror, trip meter, air conditioning and rear heating ducts. Mechanical features included a 6-cylinder engine and standard pneumatic suspension system. More than 380,000 of this S-Class series were built. be folded down for parades. A window separated the front cabin from the rear passengers. 1965–1972 The 300 SEL 6.3 (W109 series) was the world’s fastest luxury sedan of its time, able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds. Its 6.3-liter V-8 engine developed 250 hp (DIN) and 369 lb-ft of torque in a body weighing 4,010 lb. Other notable features included air suspension, air conditioning, leather upholstery, 4-speed automatic transmission, AM/FM radio and central locking system. As many as 1,840 units were brought to the U.S. during its model run. 1972–1979 1964–1981 On the Grosser (“grand”) theme, 2,677 Type 600 models were hand-built by special order. They featured air suspension and an overhead-cam 6.3-liter V-8 that developed 250 hp (DIN). Three models were available: the long-wheelbase 4-door, the longer-wheelbase “Pullman” 4-door and the even-longer-wheelbase 6-door. A few were built with a fabric roof for the rear passenger compartment that could The first vehicles to be officially designated “S-Class,” the W116 series included the audacious 6.9 model. Among the technical innovations of the W116 were an available hydropneumatic rear suspension, and a turbocharged 5-cylinder diesel engine in 2006 S-CLASS OVERVIEW 7 S-CLASS OVERVIEW continued Heritage continued the 300 SD. The turbodiesel was a popular model during the energy crisis in the U.S. during the early 1970s. With a 6.9-liter V-8 engine, the 450 SELbased 6.9 developed 286 hp. Powertrain components included fuel injection, electronic ignition and hydraulic valves. Capable of a top speed of 140 mph, the 6.9 came with a long list of standard features. Over 1,800 units were brought to the U.S. The S-Class had ribbed turn-signal and taillamp lenses — a design carried over in modified form through today. Mechanical features included double wishbone front suspension and, in 1978, an optional Antilock Braking System (ABS). Electronics were important to the S-Class, with power windows, sunroof, two-stage heated front seats, cruise control, an outside temperature indicator, headlamp washers with wipers, cassette player and automatic climate control. Total production of the W116 series was 473,035 units. 1980–1991 With the W126 series, the S-Class became well-known as a pioneer in passive safety. Mercedes-Benz introduced 3-way forked members as part of the front crumple zone, and in crash testing the S-Class was able to withstand an offset frontal impact of 34 mph with the passenger compartment left intact. ABS was available as an option, as were an Automatic Locking Differential (ASD) and Automatic Slip Control (ASR). The W126 sedans and coupes debuted a number of important seat-belt features, such as 3-position height adjustment of the sedan front shoulder belts (1979) and the coupe’s front seat-belt presenters (1982). In 1981, the S-Class was the world’s first volume-produced automobile to offer a driver’s front air bag, along with a front passenger seat-belt Emergency Tensioning Device (ETD). In 1987, a front air bag was made available for the front passenger. Innovations in comfort included power front seats with memory, heated rear seats, rear-cabin reading lights and a power rearwindow sunshade. On long-wheelbase models, rear-seat passengers had available power-adjustable seating and separate climate control vents. At the end of its production run, the W126 series S-Class included five models in the U.S.: the standard-wheelbase 300 SE Sedan; the long-wheelbase 300 SEL, 420 SEL and 560 SEL Sedans; and the 560 SEC Coupe. Safety engineering was given high priority, with improved provisions for side impacts. Safety systems included front air bags for the driver and front passenger, automatic shoulder-belt height adjustment, front seat-belt ETDs, and Automatic Slip Control (ASR). During its lifetime, the W/V140 was outfitted with auto-dimming rearview mirrors, front door-mounted side-impact air bags, front seat-belt force limiters, Brake Assist and Electronic Stability Program (ESP). For the 1998 model year, the coupe models became their own model line, the new CL-Class. Approximately 407,000 S-Class units were built from 1991 through the end of the 1999 model year in August 1998. 2003 The 2003 S-Class received a mid-cycle facelift. In addition to restyling inside and out, the interior materials became richer. Technological advances included the new option of 4MATIC™ all-wheel drive on the S 430 and S 500 Sedans, and new engines boasting nearly 500 hp for the S 55 AMG and S 600 Sedans. In addition, safety innovations included the world’s first accident-predictive vehicle preparation system, PRE-SAFE.® 2004 The S-Class maintained its reputation for leadership in the marketplace by offering a host of technological enhancements, including the industry’s first 7-speed automatic transmission (on S 430 and S 500 models without 4MATIC), enhanced Tele Aid capabilities, an easier-to-use COMAND head unit and DVD-based navigation system, and new Bose® digital surround sound. 1992–1999 2000 2005 The objective for the W140-series S-Class — introduced for model year 1992 — was to do everything better than ever before. Its large interior, dual-pane side windows and smoothrunning engines all added to comfort. The automatic climate control filtered out odors and minute particles of dust. The doors and decklid had closing assists, and rear-seat passengers were provided with a pair of ceiling-mounted vanity mirrors. The current W220-series S-Class was introduced during 1999 for the 2000 model year. The entry-level U.S. model was the S 430 Sedan in long-wheelbase (V220) form with V-8 power. It represented the ultimate in automotive engineering, at the same time offering the highest standards of ride comfort, active and passive safety, reliability and environmental compatibility. ESP then brakes individual front or rear wheels and/or reduces excess engine power as needed to help correct understeer (plowing) or oversteer (fishtailing). ESP also integrates all-speed traction control, which senses drive-wheel slip under acceleration and individually brakes the slipping wheel or wheels, and/or reduces excess engine power, until control is regained 1 Not available No-charge option (see p. 33) No-charge option (see p. 33) Not available Not available 4MATIC features a permanent 40/60 front/rear torque split maintained via a planetary center differential. 4-ETS monitors the speed of all four wheels to detect wheel slip, then applies individual brakes as needed to provide the effect of locking the front, rear and/or center differentials, and/or reduces excess engine power. 4-ETS continually balances the torque split to ensure that power is permitted to flow to the wheel(s) with traction. 4MATIC also incorporates the functions of ESP1 PERFORMANCE Acceleration, 0–60 mph2 Fuel economy, EPA estimate3 highway estimate4 7.6 seconds 6.9 seconds 6.1 seconds 4.6 seconds 4.6 seconds 17 mpg 17 mpg (4MATIC: 17 mpg) 16 mpg (4MATIC: 16 mpg) 15 mpg 12 mpg 25 mpg 26 mpg (4MATIC: 22 mpg) LWB Sedan = Long-wheelbase Sedan. 1 No system, regardless of how advanced, can overcome physics or correct careless driving. Please always wear your seat belt. Performance is limited by available traction, which snow, ice and other conditions can affect. Always drive carefully, consistent with conditions. Best performance in snow is obtained with winter tires. 2 Stated rates of acceleration are based upon manufacturer’s track results and may vary depending upon model, environmental and road surface conditions, driving style, elevation and vehicle load. 24 mpg (4MATIC: 22 mpg) 22 mpg 3 2006 EPA estimated fuel economy. Compare the estimated mpg to the estimated mpg of other vehicles. You may get different mileage depending on how fast you drive, weather conditions and trip length. 4 Your actual highway mileage will probably be less than the highway estimate. 5 Please obey all speed laws. 6 AMG 18" and 19" wheels and accompanying high-speed-rated tires provide substantially increased treadwear and reduced ride comfort compared to H-rated tires. Serious wheel and tire damage may occur if the vehicle is operated on rough or damaged road surfaces or upon 19 mpg encountering road debris or obstacles. 7 Z-rated tires are optimized for performance driving and may provide reduced ride comfort, increased tire noise, substantially increased treadwear and greater susceptibility to damage compared with H-rated tires. 8 Braking effectiveness also depends on proper brake system maintenance, and tire and road conditions. 2006 S-CLASS SPECIFICATIONS 29 SPECIFICATIONS continued CHASSIS S 350 SEDAN Front suspension Rear suspension Airmatic air suspension with Adaptive Damping System Independent 4-link (double wishbone on S 430 and S 500 with optional 4MATIC), with antidive geometry Independent 5-arm multilink with antisquat geometry (ADS II) Active Body Control (ABC) Steering Turning circle, curb-to-curb S 430 LWB SEDAN and S 500 LWB SEDAN S 55 AMG LWB SEDAN S 600 LWB SEDAN Independent 4-link Independent 4-link Independent 5-arm multilink Independent 5-arm multilink Standard Standard Not available Not available Electronically controlled pneumatic spring-struts integrate variable-rate shock absorbers and coil springs.
