Summary of Content
2 3 THE PURE GRAND TOURER GranTurismo, as an idea in itself, is pure Italian, born and bred. In principle, the original concept was enticingly simple and involved travelling long distances in style, comfort and at high speed. Seamlessly combining these two worlds was, of course, far from simple. Yet it’s exactly what we did in 1947 with the A6 1500 GT Pininfarina. Such power had never been so beautifully packaged and delivered – opening up all kinds of new, long-distance possibilities in the process. Today’s GranTurismo models are direct descendants of this breakthrough innovation. They embody the irresistible allure of exotic Italian style, combined with race-bred performance. They offer a tantalising blend of exclusive luxury, progressive technology and surging, uncompromising power. All with a spine-tingling soundtrack to match. 4 5 G GranTurismo Sport and GranTurismo MC each put a world of beautifully resolved contradictions in the palms of your hands. With every drive, you will want to immerse yourself in the pure joy of travel that these vehicles provide. There are some, however, who want to 6 enjoy the performance from a different perspective. They crave the wide open skies. The exhilaration of the open air. And, naturally, all the classic yet contemporary comforts you’d expect from Maserati. For these individuals, we present the GranCabrio Sport and the GranCabrio MC. 7 100 ICONIC YEARS Maserati has enjoyed a long history of high-profile success on the race track – and what we’ve learned over the years has directly shaped the design and performance characteristics of our cars. On December 1st 1914, Alfieri, Ernesto and Ettore Maserati set up their own business in Bologna, modifying Isotta Fraschinis for road racing. In 1926, Alfieri Maserati drives the Maserati Tipo 26 to victory in its first ever race – a class win in the treacherous Targa Florio in the mountains of Sicily. Wilbur Shaw wins the Indianapolis 500 at the wheel of the ‘Boyle Special’ 8 CTF in 1939. Average speed: 185.13 km/h (115 mph). Driving the same car, Shaw repeats his win of this famous endurance race in 1940. The company starts making passenger cars in 1947 – and creates the inspirational Maserati A6 1500 GT Pininfarina grand tourer. The first GranTurismo. In 1953, Juan Manuel Fangio wins the Italian GP in a Maserati A6GCM. It’s his first F1 victory with Maserati. Maserati enjoys success after success on the race track throughout the early part of the 20th century, with wins including two Indianapolis 500s, 29 victories in Formula 1, and the 1957 F1 World Championship at the Nürburgring, won by Fangio in a 250F. The result gives Fangio the F1 World Championship title. Maserati launches the 3500 GT 2+2 sports coupé in 1957, introducing important innovations such as twin-spark ignition, disc brakes and fuel injection. 8 Stirling Moss and Dan Gurney win the 1960 1000km Nürburgring in the Maserati Birdcage Tipo 61. 1961: second consecutive win for the Maserati Birdcage Tipo 61 at the 1000km Nürburgring. Drivers: Stirling Moss, Masten Gregory and Lloyd Casner. In 1963, Maserati showcases the world’s first luxury four-door sports sedan, the Quattroporte. During the late 1960s and 1970s, the company launches a series of ultra-high performance supercars – Mistral, Ghibli, Khamsin, Bora. The charismatic Maserati 3200 GT, styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign, launches in 1998. The Frankfurt auto show of 2003 sees the unveiling of the fifth-generation Quattroporte – the first Maserati to be designed by the legendary Pininfarina in 50 years. Maserati enters three MC12 GT1 racers to the FIA GT in 2004 and goes on to win six Team, five Drivers’ and two Constructors’ Championships in the years up to 2010. The MC12 also scores three overall victories in the Spa 24 Hours. Double victory in 2010. Andrea Bertolini, in an MC12, becomes the first Italian to win an FIA World Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953. For Maserati, it’s the first FIA World Title since Fangio’s in 1957. 9 I TA LY I S R I C H I N W O N D E R S 10 11 HERE’S A UNIQUE ONE TOURER DE FORCE You’re looking at endless dynamic promise. Whatever your ambition, whatever the distance, the Maserati GranTurismo Sport delivers – in luxurious, audacious style. The exterior tells the story perfectly. The powerful, completely restyled front end is dominated by a new, deep-cut oval front grille bearing the Maserati Trident in chrome and with bold red detailing, a tradition reserved only for the most powerful Maserati models. There’s a revised Sport-specific front splitter paired with a rear extractor to optimise and balance out downforce at speed. And there’s an elegant new trim, also exclusive to the Sport version, for the steeply raked Bi-Xenon headlights with Adaptive Light Control. Additionally, the headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights integrate perfectly into the bumpers and feature a dramatic steel finish. 16 The side profile is inspired by the historic Tipo 60/62 Maserati ‘Birdcage’ and features signature styling cues such as the triple air vent apertures in the front flanks and triangular C-pillars, which house the iconic Saetta logo. Imposing, 20’’ Astro Design alloy wheels in Silver accentuate the firmly planted, resolutely purposeful stance, while the powerful Brembo brake calipers are clearly visible – signalling massive stopping power. Another striking feature can be found at the all-new rear – the bumper echoes the revised styling at the front, creating a cohesive, harmonious overall unit. New paint choices extend your options for personal expression, too. They include striking, threelayer Blu Assoluto, Rosso Italiano, Rosso Magma, Blu Inchiostro and Grigio Pietra finishes. All in all, this is unmistakable elegance – but with a deeply provocative edge. 17 EVERYTHING CONNECTS The interior picks up on the dynamic themes of the exterior – with fine-tuned luxury and a sense of boundless potential. Soft and tactile Alcantara trim on the backs of the Sport steering wheel-mounted gearshift paddles, for instance, elegantly invite the driver to fully exploit the formidable 4.7-litre V8. The Maserati Trident – a clear statement in itself – is hand-sewn into the headrests. Even the seat stitching, which reflects the lines of the low, crouching front grille, indicates sporting purpose combined with attention to every luxurious detail. Other highlights include a newly 18 designed dashboard and clock, traditional Poltrona Frau™ leather, and Dark Chrome and Eco Chrome detailing on the door and quarter panels. As for accessing the rear seats, the Easy Entry system makes life particularly easy. Both front seats slide forward and back electrically, giving plenty of room whether passengers are getting into or out of the car. Two individually profiled rear seats, along with class-leading head and legroom, a central pull-down armrest, two cupholders, courtesy lights and a pair of climate control vents also ensure excellent comfort. 19 EXTREME EXPRESSION This is GranTurismo at its most extreme – a grand tourer alive with motor sport atmosphere that inspires you to keep driving in hand-crafted, richly evocative comfort. The GranTurismo MC is, without a doubt, unique. Its most striking exterior feature is the optional lightweight carbon fibre bonnet with an aggressive central air intake and two large air vents modelled on those of the MC Trofeo, a pure Maserati racer that shares many features with the production model. There is also a new front grille, presenting the face of Maserati at its menacing best, with an MC-specific front splitter and bespoke headlight trim. 20 21 O On the all-important functional level, the front spoiler, side skirts and slots in the re-profiled front bumper combine to maximise downforce at high speed and cool the brakes. The side skirts, meanwhile, integrate with the vents to channel airflow under the car’s body, thus increasing stability. The central positioning of the Sport exhaust system’s twin tailpipes also helps to optimise airflow, minimising turbulence and improving downforce and stability. Those pipes deliver a spine-tingling sound, too. The GranTurismo MC is offered with new three-layer exterior colours, including Blue Assoluto, Blue Inchiostro, Rosso Italiano and Rosso Magma. And it stands – ready for the grand tour of a lifetime or the next lap of the track – on striking 20’’ Trofeo design alloy wheels. 22 23 R E F I N E M E N T I N T H E R AW The interior of the GranTurismo MC presents a compelling mix of stripped down motor sport innovation, soothing comfort and progressive technology. The front Sport seats have optional carbon fibre backs while also featuring the luxurious contrast of optional Poltrona Frau™ leather and Alcantara. The standard trims are in a seductive, soft black. The GranTurismo MC is offered with three choices of steering wheel, each with a race-optimised flat-bottomed section and multi-function buttons. They can be clad in full leather, a combination of leather and Alcantara or a combination of leather and carbon fibre. The long gearshift paddles even further sharpen the sporting edge, and make shifting gear, in even the most demanding situations, effortless and intuitive. 24 25 26 27 F LUID DYNAMIC S 28 The stunning overall profile of the GranCabrio Sport carries the unmistakable signature of Pininfarina – lines that have graced our vehicles for generations. The sleek yet imposing front end features a newly designed front bumper, a prominent new front grille bearing the Maserati Trident and a front splitter, also new. The Bi-Xenon headlights, with their integrated LED Daytime Running Lights and revised trim, merge seamlessly into the car’s rising, muscular front flanks, accentuating the emphatic power on offer. 29 T The drama of the side view is accentuated by short overhangs, the stretched bonnet and suitably large 20’’ alloy wheels. With the roof up, the impression is of athletic fluidity, a look enhanced by rounded rear wings and a new bumper design to match the purposeful front. At the touch of a button, however, the car’s character takes on a new dimension: the roof disappears and a soul-stirring new shape reveals itself. 30 31 UNIQUE ELEGANCE The interior of the GranCabrio Sport has a unique energy characterised by a long and proven racing heritage, an eternally bold and progressive outlook and a uniquely Italian sense of style. The first thing to strike the eye is the newly designed dashboard, with its characteristic V-shape as the focal point. You’re also sure to notice the Trident logos embossed into the headrests, and the flattened, three-spoke Sport steering wheel with its profiled grip and multi-function buttons. With the roof down, the interior merges beautifully with the lines of the bodywork. This open, uninterrupted feel is enhanced by front seat belt mounts that lie flush within the beltline of the body. As for the soft top, this is an insulated triple-layer cloth design with a steel and aluminium frame for quiet, draught-free motoring. A thermal glass rear screen, meanwhile, makes sure that the car remains a joy to drive whatever the weather. 32 33 P O W E R P L A Y The GranCabrio MC is the hardest-hitting Maserati convertible – without compromising the seductive Italian elegance and luxurious comfort. Here are a few of the most compelling details. A dramatically sculpted new front bumper and new front splitter combine with a spoiler and large air intakes to create an imposingly sporty profile. The rear features a high, centrally positioned exhaust and a new bumper dynamically designed to improve the airflow at the back of the car. A spoiler, which incorporates a third brake light, embodies bold style with focused purpose by maximising downforce at high speeds. There are also special touches such as the Bianco Birdcage three-layer paint finish, which brings the bodywork to rousing life with a bluish tinge. The GranCabrio MC’s powerful look is further accentuated by 20’’ MC Design wheels. 34 35 SKY’S THE LIMIT The racing heritage of Maserati becomes an even more direct, hands-on experience inside the GranCabrio MC. And with the roof down, it feels like the sky’s the limit. The wraparound Sport seats echo the elegant lines of the exterior, while providing the extra hold needed for spirited driving. The headrests integrated into the seatbacks are embossed with the Maserati logo. The revised three-spoke Sport steering wheel has a more heavily profiled grip, while the top and bottom of the rim are flattened to ensure even greater focus and precision. Behind it, there are longer Trofeo Design gearshift paddles, available in carbon fibre on request. The accelerator and brake pedals, meanwhile, are in perforated aluminium as standard – a detail taken straight from the race track for optimum lightness and grip. 36 37 T E C H N O L O G Y AT YOUR COMMAND A true GranTurismo needs a grand-scale engine – with continentcrossing capabilities and a ruthless streak, as and when you need it. Which is where the Ferrari-built 4.7-litre V8 comes in. This compact and lightweight powerplant is fitted to all GranTurismo and GranCabrio models, develops 460hp, 520Nm of torque and revs to an impressive 7,500rpm. It also makes extensive use of motor sport-derived technology for race-grade resistance to high dynamic loads while maintaining exceptional refinement. The overall result is smooth and commanding cruising power at all times, breathtaking acceleration in any situation – and a legendary sound that could only come from a naturally aspirated, Italian-built V8. The engine can power the GranTurismo Sport and MC from zero to 62mph in 4.8 seconds and 4.7 seconds on to a maximum speed of 186mph (299km/h) and 187mph (301km/h). The GranCabrio Sport and GranCabrio MC reach 62mph from a standing start in 5.0 and 4.9 seconds respectively. Top speeds are 179mph (288km/h) and 181mph (291km/h). 38 All this power finds its way to the road via a ZF six-speed MC Auto Shift gearbox. This operates in Auto-Normal, Auto-Sport, Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport and ICE modes. These offer a wide range of driving styles – from graceful comfort to hard-edged and direct. Manual-Sport mode, for instance, delivers near-seamless upshifts, plus automatic rev matching on the downshift. Not only does this smooth out the transition, the pops and burbles are also a joy to the ears of any motor sport aficionado. Another highlight is gear-holding. With this, the transmission will hold a gear until it receives driver input – right through to the red line. There’s also a rev limiter override function and a high-performance launch control feature. A large digital rpm indicator, meanwhile, sharpens the focus on perfect shift times for an even more engaging experience. 39 T E C H N O L O G Y BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL 40 Near-perfect front-to-rear weight distribution – with a marginal rearward bias – has always been a Maserati hallmark. This is achieved with the GranTurismo and GranCabrio models, in customary style, by locating the V8 just behind the front axle. Out on the open road – or on the race track – this delivers a world of benefits. They include naturally balanced handling, optimum grip, great steering feedback and precise directional stability. The GranTurismo Sport and GranCabrio Sport both offer Sport Skyhook damping, which constantly adapts its settings to suit the road conditions (optional for GranTurismo MC and GranCabrio MC). Normal is a day-to-day configuration that still, nonetheless, maintains the essential dynamic involvement you would expect of a Maserati. Sport, meanwhile, provides a far more direct and firmly set up driving experience. A double wishbone suspension set-up, hydraulic steering – rather than a less engaging electro-mechanical system – Brembo brakes and a sophisticated mechanical limited slip differential also contribute in these vital areas. As for the GranCabrio, additional reinforcements in lightweight aluminium ensure surefooted stability right through to the dynamic limits. The GranTurismo MC features lightweight, 20’’ forged alloy wheels as standard, while Pirelli’s PZero fourth-generation 2017 tyres are specially designed to deliver greater mid-corner grip and progression. You’ll feel it on the track and constantly be inspired by the potential out on the open road. That said, the sporting performance remains precise, linear and comfortable at all times – as you would expect of a true grand tourer. 41 42 43 E N T E R T A I N M E N T A N D C O N N E C T I V I T Y ON-BOARD SOPHISTICATION Grand touring at this level requires a particularly sophisticated combination of power, performance and elegance when it comes to onboard entertainment and connectivity. This is provided by an advanced new premium audio system and a cutting-edge Infotainment system. PREMIUM AUDIO INFOTAINMENT Driving, or being driven in, a Maserati is a uniquely rousing experience. So it’s only fitting that the vehicle has an audio system always perfectly in tune with the mood – whether you’re driving hard or soaking up the miles on the trip of a lifetime. An all-new Infotainment system for all GranTurismo and GranCabrio models includes a high-resolution 8.4’’ Maserati Touch Control Plus unit (MTC+) that allows simple and intuitive control of features such as audio, navigation and comfort functions. There is also a user-friendly rotary controller in the central console and the system is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone mirroring functions. MTC+ can be operated in three ways: via the touch-screen, the rotary controller or Siri voice command. The system’s menus have options to configure the car’s main settings and menus are readily accessible through the icons displayed at the bottom of the touch-screen. Other highlights include a handy mobile phone storage compartment containing an SD card reader, a USB socket and an aux-in port. This allows the user to play music, watch films or even view images. Bluetooth connectivity, meanwhile, is standard. This comes in the shape of new premium audio systems from worldclass audio innovator Harman Kardon – tailor-made for the interiors of the GranTurismo and the GranCabrio. The GranCabrio system features 11 high-quality speakers, while there are 10 on the Coupé powered by a Class-D 12-channel 900-watt amplifier. Each system features AuraVox sound tuning and class-leading Harman Kardon sound processing technologies. These are exceptionally advanced packages that deliver distortion-free and detail-rich listening enjoyment in all four seats. As for the styling, advanced technology allows the powerful speakers to be exceptionally compact so they integrate seamlessly with each interior. There is also, of course, the inimitably elegant yet hi-tech look of the Harman Kardon brand to enjoy. 44 45 S A F E T Y I N S A F E Maserati makes life extremely comfortable and convenient for all on board, with standard features such as a folding front armrest with an illuminated storage compartment, cruise control, automatic headlight activation, electric opening assist for the boot lid and doors, dual zone automatic climate control with two rear outlets, and a good deal more. There is also, of course, a very strong focus on safety. The Maserati Stability Program (MSP) is a stand-out example. Developed in the most extreme test conditions, it uses an array of sensors to constantly monitor driving status and deploys a host of safety and performance systems to maintain handling and grip. If, for instance, a skid is detected, MSP selectively reduces engine torque and can activate the brakes with finely varied inputs to restore stability within milliseconds. Other functions include ABS with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Anti Slip Regulation (ASR), Engine brake torque control (MSR), which prevents the wheels from locking when downshifting on low-grip surfaces, and an Advanced Brake Assist system (ABA), which recognises emergency braking situations and increases the pressure in the braking circuit to maximise stopping power. 46 H A N D S Additionally, the Maserati Stability Program (MSP) works in harmony with Anti Slip Regulation (ASR) traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS) to stop the wheels from locking under hard braking. This is enhanced by Hydraulic Braking Assistance (HBA). When it comes to light and sight, all models are fitted with Adaptive Light Control, a system that swivels the headlights as you turn, greatly improving road illumination in corners. To the rear, triangular lamp clusters comprise some 96 LEDs to ensure maximum nighttime visibility. Daytime Running Lights using LED technology, meanwhile, enhance the visibility of your vehicle during the day. There’s a standard rear-view camera, too. This integrates with the on-board monitor to ensure easy, incident-free reversing. All models are also offered with the optional Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS). Should a tyre become under-inflated, a warning light illuminates in the cabin. More passive safety is offered by airbags all round, including side airbags integrated with the Sport seats and curtain airbags. In GranCabrio models, an extra level of security is provided by a telescopic roll bar system that deploys in less than 190 milliseconds. 47 P E R S O N A L I Z A T I O N TAILORED TO YOU Maserati is renowned for offering remarkably high levels of personalisation options. This means that customers can tailor their cars to precisely suit their own distinctive taste, choosing from a wide range of exterior metallic or specialised paint finishes, brake caliper colours, alloy wheels, interior trims including Alcantara and carbon, and contrast-colour stitching. Alternatively, there are various, meticulously assembled packages to choose from. CENTENNIAL EDITION This package commemorates the 100th year of Maserati – reached in 2014 – with a classic, atmospheric mix of sporting intent and handcrafted elegance. Master Maserati driving courses allow participants to directly experience the performance of the entire Maserati model range in depth and in total safety. The programme is structured for various levels of driving experience and is supervised by expert Maserati instructors. Drivers develop their skills on a highly technical circuit and learn to handle the cars to professional levels.
