CONTENTS KIA BOOSTS ITS SUPPORT OF LIFE-SAVING TEEN DRIVING SCHOOL In response to increasing demand, B.R.A.K.E.S. (Be Responsible And Keep Everyone Safe) and Kia are expanding the Teen Pro-Active Driving School in an effort to help reduce the high rate of motor vehicle accidents involving teenage drivers. The program is proven to improve driving skills and help teens make better decisions behind the wheel. According to a recent study, teens that complete the B.R.A.K.E.S. program are much less likely to be involved in an accident in their first three years of driving. “The leading cause of death for American teens is motor vehicle crashes, and our mission is to save lives by providing young drivers with the real-life driving experience they need in a safe and controlled environment,” said professional driver Doug Herbert, founder of B.R.A.K.E.S.. Participating teens get behind the wheel in one of more than 40 Kia vehicles for hands-on practice at skills like emergency maneuvering and skid-control. As if sliding sideways in a Soul weren’t enough to widen teens’ attention spans, the B.R.A.K.E.S. team of instructors includes racecar drivers, stunt drivers, and even Secret Service agents. Kia’s passion for design and obsession with craftsmanship were once again on display this fall at New York Fashion Week. Kia attracted some of the most exciting designers to the Kia STYLE360 event space in bustling Midtown Manhattan, with a lineup of runway shows and parties featuring the likes of Angela Simmons’ Vipe Activewear, as well as Kristin Cavallari’s collaborations with Emerald Duv Jewelry and Chinese Laundry. The highlight of the week, however, was the runway show for the Serena Williams Signature Statement Collection, with Serena presenting her designs just two days after the U.S. Open Women’s Championship. As presenting sponsor, Kia also gave fashion industry insiders the opportunity to discover the beautifully sculpted 2017 Cadenza sedan, with a fleet of vehicles available to transport fashion editors, celebrities, and VIPs to and from fashion shows and parties. As if sliding sideways in a Soul weren’t enough to widen teens’ attention spans, the B.R.A.K.E.S. team of instructors includes racecar drivers, stunt drivers, and even Secret Service agents. KIA CELEBRATES ITS TWO MILLIONTH CAR MADE IN AMERICA, EXPANDS INTO LATIN AMERICA Kia’s first North American plant, Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG), produces more than forty percent of all Kia vehicles sold in the United States, and represents an investment of more than $1.1 billion.* KMMG’s team members recently celebrated as the plant’s two millionth vehicle — a white 2016 Sorento SXL — rolled off the assembly line in West Point, Georgia. Including Kia team members and local suppliers, Kia has created more than 15,000 jobs in West Point and the surrounding region since opening in 2009. Kia will look to recreate its U.S.-based success as it now expands into Latin America. Kia recently began selling three models — Sportage, Sorento, and Forte — in ten major cities in Mexico, and unveiled its first manufacturing plant south of the border in the state of Nuevo León. In the name of setting new standards for car production in Latin America while reducing environmental impacts, the state-of-the-art plant boasts a high tech energy monitoring system that continually evaluates energy usage; air purification systems to minimize carbon emissions; 100% high-efficiency LED lighting; thermally-insulated buildings; and even plans to install a solar array on the plant’s reflective white roof. Beginning with car computer systems like Kia’s UVO — which does everything from using an app to remotely precondition cabin temperature to scheduling the next oil change — the way we interact with our cars continues to evolve. The current and next waves of intelligent car technologies are known as Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Engineered to improve safety for everyone on the road, these systems will enable drivers to focus more on the conveniences and pleasures of driving, and less on the stresses inherent to our modern, congested roads. Automation is clearly the next step forward in driving technology. Here’s how Kia enables drivers — now and into the near future. 2015 2016 2020 2030 Rear Cross-Traffic Alert Helps warn the driver of cross traffic while the vehicle is in reverse by activating audible and visual alerts to help reduce the likelihood of a collision. Available Advanced Smart Cruise Control Uses radar to maintain a predetermined distance from the vehicle directly ahead, automatically slowing or accelerating when appropriate. Blind-Spot Detection with Lane-Change Assist Detects vehicles in the driver’s blind spot and then provides audio and visual alerts. Lane-Change Assist helps detect vehicles approaching up to 230 feet from behind. Lane Departure Warning Senses the vehicle moving out of its lane without the turn signal being used. When it does, it alerts you with a combination of audible and visual warnings. Front and Rear Park Assist Employs a sonar-sensor system concealed in both the front and rear bumpers. When parking, an audible warning is given if the system detects certain objects close to your vehicle. Surround-View Monitor Utilizes four cameras to provide a view around the vehicle — which is especially helpful when parking. Advanced Vehicle Safety Management System Integrates control of various vehicle monitoring systems including Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the seatbelt mechanisms, multiple warning systems (which alerts the driver to danger), the braking system, and it activates the Pre-Safe Belt (PSB) system. Dynamic Bending Light Pivots the headlights to follow curves in the road. High-Beam Assist Automatically dims the lights for oncoming traffic or engages the high beams when the road is clear. Autonomous Emergency Braking Detects and monitor vehicles traveling ahead of you. It then works to automatically apply the brakes if it determines a crash might be imminent, helping to avoid a collision or mitigate the effects if it cannot be avoided. Forward Collision Warning System Activates alerts when the vehicle detects objects immediately ahead that may cause a potential impact, encouraging the driver to decelerate. Highway Autonomous Driving Employs a combination of radar and camera detection systems to interpret lane markings, helping the car to stay in its lane or switch into others to pass vehicles — all without driver input. Urban Autonomous Driving Navigates the car through densely-congested city environments, and reroutes the vehicle according to live traffic updates. Driver Status Monitoring Analyzes the driver’s face, ensuring their attention does not veer from the road for too long. If it detects that the driver is distracted from the road for too long, an Emergency Stop System automatically directs the car into an appropriate side lane and comes to a halt. Traffic Jam Assist Monitors the vehicle ahead during congested traffic conditions, maintaining a safe distance while moving into appropriate lanes to gain ground. Vehicle-To-Everything (V2X) Communications Systems Applies a series of sensors, radar, LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), and external cameras to perceive the surrounding environment and all relevant obstacles, as a human driver does. V2X will allow a true self-driving car to react as a human driver would. “Living in Southern California, traffic is part of the daily grind. My office’s location is stored in my favorite destinations, so right after I hit the push-button start, I always tell Siri®, ‘Show me the quickest route to the office.’ The Maps app comes up and displays a few routes, and I simply select the fastest one — I love opening up the turbo engine. The only problem is the fastest route won’t always pass my favorite coffee shop, but then I can press the coffee cup icon on the screen and it lists all the nearest cafes, from nearest to furthest from my location. It’s that easy.” ALL IN A DAY’S PLAY With a new 201-horsepower engine, the turbocharged 2017 Soul Exclaim with Apple CarPlay ® is ready to paint the town. “My iPhone® is not just a phone, it’s the lifeline to my business and personal life, not to mention entertainment. In the morning, I listen to NPR, Pandora, Spotify, or one of the audiobooks stored on my phone, but sometimes it takes a little heavy metal to get me going. There’s something oddly satisfying about saying, ‘Siri, play metal.’ Even when I’m cranking the Harman Kardon® system, with the amplified subwoofer in back and massive center speaker in front, I don’t think I’ve ever gotten the volume over 50%.” The right information for the road ahead. 6 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 Mural by TELMO MIEL “I communicate by text messages more often than phone calls, so I love being able to listen to and dictate text messages. My wife recently opened a furniture store and she’s always recruiting me to run errands. If she needs a new piece picked up, she’ll just text me an address. I click on the address, CarPlay shows the location on a map, and Siri gives me turn-by-turn directions. People are amazed at how much furniture fits in this Soul with the rear seats folded down.” When the fun and funky Soul debuted in 2009, it quickly became one of Kia’s most popular models thanks to its iconic design and stylish, well-appointed interior. With the introduction of the 2017 Soul Exclaim, Kia offers its top-of-the-line model with a wealth of sporty features — 18” alloy wheels, larger front disc brakes, and twin chrome-tipped exhausts. These upgrades hint at the biggest change to this Soul: a lot more pep in this Soul’s step thanks to a powerful new 201-horsepower 1.6L turbocharged engine paired with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. The high-performance driving experience is complemented by Apple’s premiere automotive interface. Apple CarPlay integrates many of the most popular apps into the Soul’s eight-inch center display and Harman Kardon® audio system. Those familiar with Apple’s operating system will feel right at home with Apple CarPlay’s infotainment display and will be able to play music, use navigation, make calls, read and send text messages, and command a variety of other functions and apps, all using the Soul’s audio controls or touchscreen — or simply speaking to Siri. To see how the Soul and CarPlay system function in real life, we followed along with Karim, a software engineer from Long Beach, California, on a typical day. ANDROID AUTO ™ “After work, I like to open up the panoramic sunroof and listen to podcasts. Whether news, comedy, philosophy or anything else, there’s a podcast for it. Or sometimes I listen to books, too. If I want to meet my wife or some friends for dinner, I can tell Siri the name of the restaurant (or type it in), and CarPlay even shows me the star ratings based on user reviews. I’ve actually found a couple of new favorites just scrolling through the ratings of restaurants. As a software guy, I’m always trying to make technology faster and more effective; CarPlay’s conveniences and Soul’s turbocharger definitely accomplish that.” Fans of th Android™ operating system will appreciate Android Auto compatibility in select Kia vehicles. Android Auto features an intuitive interface, integrated steering wheel controls, and powerful voice-recognition features that are designed to minimize distraction and keep drivers focused on the road. With Google Maps™ leading the way, voice-guided navigation and live traffic information are always at your fingertips. Meanwhile, voice-recognition lets you make calls — or send and receive messages — with your hands on the wheel. TELLURIDE CONCEPT With pioneering in-cabin health-and-wellness technologies, this full-size SUV takes luxury to the next level. Kia once again surprised the automotive press at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit: this time, with Kia’s cutting-edge vision of a large SUV. The Telluride concept is a seven-passenger, three-row luxury vehicle that offers all the rugged capabilities expected of an SUV alongside a wealth of never-before-seen passenger comforts and technological features. Created in Kia’s North American Design Center under the discerning eye of chief designer Tom Kearns — the visionary credited with the design renaissance of Cadillac — the Telluride aims to elevate the in-cabin experience, focusing particular attention on second-row passengers. The rearhinged back doors swing open 90 degrees, revealing reclining leather captain’s seats with fold-away footrests. Along each seatback is a series of precise diamond-cut openings embedded with Smart Sensors that monitor passengers’ vital signs and health information. The information displays on individual door panel screens that contro a revolutionary Light Emitted Rejuvenation (LER) system mounted beneath the oversized sunroof. This relaxing light therapy aids in restoring the body’s circadian rhythms, helping treat desynchronosis (i.e. jet lag) and improving energy levels. If passengers prefer entertainment to relaxation, they can easily scroll through their digital media by using Swipe Command—a thin, touch-sensitive, interactive band mounted on the second row’s center console. A simple swipe of the hand selects media, which can be played either through the premium seven-speaker Harman Kardon® audio system, or on a set of portable Harman Kardon® headphones, which charge wirelessly when stowed. The Telluride’s powertrain is equally futuristic. A fingerprint-activated push-button start activates Telluride’s potent plug-in hybrid electric (PHEV) powertrain. With a 3.5-liter, 270 horsepower V6 engine paired with a high-torque, 130 horsepower electric motor, Telluride unleashes 400 horsepower through an advanced all-wheel drive system — all while achieving an estimated 30 mpg on the highway. Is the Telluride purely conceptual? Perhaps. But with Kia’s history of delivering vehicles that bear strong resemblance to its pioneering concepts, this sophisticated, groundbreaking SUV could soon become a reality. Created in Kia’s North American Design Center under the discerning eye of chief designer Tom Kearns — the visionary credited with the design renaissance of Cadillac — the Telluride elevates the interior experience. 8 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 *Based on Kia estimates. WINTER 2016 KIA.COM 9 RAFAEL NADAL Kia’s global ambassador lives to serve — whether on the court or through his charitable foundation. With a record nine championships on the traditional red clay courts of the French Open, international tennis star Rafael Nadal is among the best players in tennis history. Widely recognized as the “King of Clay,” even such superlatives fail to do justice to his accomplishments. To date, Nadal has won 14 Grand Slam titles — including Wimbledon, the U.S. Open, and the Australian Open — as well as an Olympic gold medal in Beijing in 2008. In winning all of the Grand Slams and the gold medal, he’s only the second player in history with the “Golden Slam” on his resume. His successes, however, extend well beyond the court. Born and raised on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca, he created the Rafa Nadal Foundation to spread his good fortune in struggling communities on his home island. He was first inspired to give back after a trip to India in 2007, where he was confronted by shocking levels of poverty. In 2010, he returned to India to unveil the Anantapur Educational Center, a school and tennis academy in one of India’s most impoverished states. Typical of his sincere and humble nature, rather than orchestrate a public relations event, Rafa didn’t even invite the media. As a person who has achieved so much at such a young age, winning your first Grand Slam as a teen, how do you define success? Success is a difficult word to define. To win at what you do, to achieve your goals, and to be happy are the most important things. I won way more than I expected or even dreamed of when I was a kid. I am proud of every single match I played and gave it my all, and for sure those that made me win big finals. After all these years I consider my life successful and I am happy with what I have achieved. What drives you? My motivation is all based on competition. I love to compete and I love the sport. To be able to go out there and compete against the best still motivates me to work hard and practice to be able to be at the right level. Every time I step on a tennis court I am in competitive mode. I think in a way all professional players have that same feeling stepping on a court. It’s what we live for. Many players seem capable of winning a Grand Slam, but very few do. What is it that makes Grand Slam champions so dominant? Grand Slam tournaments are important – the most important 10 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 because – they have a long tradition behind them. But there are many other tournaments during the year that are very important as well. Nowadays the Grand Slams do make a difference and to win one of them obviously brings lots of confidence. At every step along the way, that confidence is gained by winning. Confidence is very important in tennis as it is in many aspects of our life. You’re regarded as one of the fastest and most powerful athletes ever to play, as well as one of the best strategists. Do you find the physical or mental aspects of the game more difficult to master? Tennis is a complicated sport and physical ability, tactical smarts, mental toughness are all very important. Mastering one of them is not enough; the right balance of all is necessary. How has your game evolved during your career? The game evolves and changes, not only because you become more mature and therefore you learn, but also the nature of the game and the sport changes. Tennis is a game where your opponent also evolves his weapons to beat you. In that regard you have to continually adapt yourself and improve to remain suc- cessful. It is part of the game and the learning process that never ends. I always say that in tennis you lose more times than you win so it’s about managing well and learning from the defeats. In each and every match, every tournament, only one wins in the end! To play at the very highest level, is it more important to focus on perfecting your game, or analyzing and knowing the game and strategy of your opponents? I always prefer to depend on my game rather than depending on the opponent. But tennis is also about knowing how to adapt to the different circumstances of a match, during the match. But it is also important in order to develop your game to know what challenge you have in front of you and meet it. Fans expect a lot of you at every match. How do you cope with the pressure? Yes, that is true, and it does bring extra pressure. But, again, dealing with pressure is part of the game — the mental game — and also an important stage of a tennis career. I actually have enjoyed that pressure. But it is true that it can become very negative. What are your favorite places to get away from it all? I have to say that I am lucky since I come from a holiday destination. Mallorca is definitely my place to be, especially during the summer. Like many Spanish sports stars, you’re known to be intensely competitive, yet very humble and easygoing off-court. How do you turn off the competitive mode? How do you like to spend your time off the court? What are your interests beyond tennis? I think that this is a sport and as such the rivalry must end once the match is over. I can be very good friends with someone off the court, as I do, but once we play that friendship is over. The respect, the correctness, stays but we are out there to win. I do have other interests off the tennis court on all kinds of levels, from hobbies to the business side of life. I love golf and I love to be involved in the business that will follow my tennis career. Notably with the Rafa Nadal Sports Centre and the Rafa Nadal Academy, they are also a big part of my future. What inspired you to start your charitable foundation? I think we are indebted to society and we have to give back. I thought this was the best way to do so and I am very happy with the projects we are doing and the results. WINTER 2016 KIA.COM 11 DRIVEN BY INNOVATION The next evolution of the automobile is here. Transportation is transforming. App-based services and the sharing economy are revolutionizing traditional industries, from the way people request a ride to how they book travel and accommodations. The auto industry is certainly no exception to technology-based changes. The gasoline combustion engine and the car as we know it are rapidly evolving. Every year, cars become more efficient and safer than ever before. Kia is helping lead this continual improvement. Looking into the near future, Kia is seeing 20/20. In fact, Kia’s vision is to become the worldwide leader in advanced drivetrain technology and low emissions models by the year 2020. To reach its ambitious goal, Kia and its partners plan to invest more than $10.2 billion in research and development — including new testing and production facilities that will create many future products and new jobs. By 2020, Kia plans to more than double its green car lineup to 11 models from the current four, introducing advanced drivetrains and increasing fuel efficiency across the entire line-up by 25 percent over 2014 levels. This expanded range of environmentally friendly vehicles will encompass a wide range of next generation powertrains, from hybrids and plug-in hybrids to battery-electric and hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles. Kia’s roadmap for low-emission cars also includes cleaner and more efficient advanced internal combustion engines. Kia plans to replace 70% of its current engines by 2020 with all-new, more efficient engines. And as demand for electric vehicles continues to grow, Kia’s plans reflect a multi-pronged approach to new electrified powertrain technologies. Accordingly, a wide range of eco-friendly powertrains are planned to co-exist into the future. Kia already offers several nextgeneration models that demonstrate its commitment to a lower carbon footprint, like the Optima Hybrid — first introduced in 2011 — and the zero-emissions Soul EV, which came to market in 2014. Next up, Kia will add the 2017 Kia Optima plug-in hybrid electric vehicle — capable of running 29-miles on electricity alone — and an all-new and even more efficient 2017 Optima Hybrid. Finally, Kia will debut its first dedicated hybrid crossover: the all-new 2017 Niro. 36 12 *Based on Kia estimates. Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and your vehicle’s condition. KIA.COM WINTER 2016 2017 WINTER 2017 2016 KIA.COM 33 13 ALL-NEW OPTIMA HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (HEV) When the first Optima Hybrid launched in 2011, it garnered enthusiastic reviews from the automotive media and customers alike for offering a no-compromises driving experience with outstanding fuel economy. The all-new 2017 Optima Hybrid features a range of upgrades from the previous model, most notably a new generation hybrid powertrain that boosts fuel economy by up to 10 percent. The new, lighter 2.0L GDI engine works alongside a more powerful electric motor, larger 1.62 kWh lithium battery pack, and an upgraded six-speed transmission. The more efficient powertrain is tuned for seamless transitions between electric and hybrid modes. Up front, an active grille automatically opens and closes at high and low speeds to optimize aerodynamics, which helps improve fuel economy. And for drivers looking to further maximize their mileage, the all-new EcoDAS (Driver Assistance System) with Coasting Guide will coach the driver on when to coast and brake for ultimate economy. In addition to advanced components and enhanced hybrid performance, the new Optima Hybrid boasts a more spacious, refined, and luxurious interior. ALL-NEW OPTIMA PLUG-IN HYBRID ELECTRIC VEHICLE (PHEV) In addition to the Optima Hybrid, the 2017 Optima PHEV will soon arrive in select markets. The Optima PHEV pushes the envelope of energy efficiency with a focus on more electrically-powered miles, minimizing the environmental impact of driving while offering lower running costs. With an estimated 610 miles of total driving range, the Optima PHEV has 29 miles of range in EV mode, making it a segment leader in all-electric range (AER). In addition to its drivetrain innovations, the Optima Plug-In Hybrid UVO eco telematics suite offers more than 30 convenience features, including LTE wireless connectivity. Using the UVO app, drivers can enable features like remote start, remote preconditioning of cabin temperature, and remote lock/unlock. With wireless phone charging and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay pre-installed, this is Kia’s most advanced Optima to date. NIRO HYBRID CROSSOVER Kia’s newest model flawlessly blends the best attributes of a crossover with the fuel efficiency of a hybrid. Rather than paring a vehicle down purely for efficiency, engineers placed just as much emphasis on accentuating the vehicle’s performance and utility. Niro features an elevated seating position for a more commanding view of the road, while clever packaging of its high voltage battery underneath the rear seats offers more balanced handling and maximizes interior space. Along with spaciousness and comfort, Kia has placed increased importance on quieter cabins in all of its models. Acoustic windshield glass, copious sound insulation materials under the floor and hood, careful body sealing, and the use of expanding foam inside the A- and B-pillars all decrease road and tire noise, while specially-engineered engine mounts diminish vibrations from the drivetrain. Most notable about the Niro, however, is an all-new eco-car platform, built around an Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) core. Its rigidity and lightness both improve handling and lower the overall weight for exceptional performance atypical of most hybrids. The 43-HP electric motor draws energy from a state-of-the-art lithium ion polymer battery; combined with the 1.6L GDI engine and six speed dual clutch automatic transmission allows for a powerful — and environmentally conscious — driving experience. Though the Niro’s EPA mileage numbers will be unveiled when it arrives in Spring 2017, drivers can expect outstanding fuel economy with a target of up to 50 mpg combined. Drivers who disdain pumping gas will welcome the news of the upcoming Niro Plug-In Hybrid, currently in development. SOUL ELECTRIC VEHICLE (EV) Following extensive development and testing, an all-electric version of the Soul became Kia’s first electric car in the U.S. market. The stylish Soul EV raises the bar in its segment by providing 93 estimated miles of range, perfect for your daily driving needs. While Soul EV maintains many of the distinctive design elements of the gasoline-powered Soul, perhaps what is missing best differentiates it as a pure electric vehicle. Since it boasts zero emissions, standard combustion engine components like mufflers and tailpipes are out the window; instead of a front grille that channels in air to cool the engine, it sports an aerodynamic panel concealing dual charging ports. Charging is incredibly simple, as the Soul EV plugs directly into any standard 120v outlet, or a conventional 240v EV charger; in a rush, its fast-charge feature provides a nearly full battery in around 30 minutes. Inside, the 8-inch navigation touchscreen features Kia’s exclusive suite of telematics technology, UVO eco. Using UVO eco and its accompanying smartphone app, owners can locate nearby charging stations, check the car’s remaining charge, and even remotely set the interior temperature before returning to the car — very cool. As if getting an EPA estimated MPGe rating of 92 miles highway and 120 miles city while putting out zero emissions wasn’t enough, this green machine was even honored for its pioneering use of sugar and corn-based substrates instead of petroleum in most of its interior parts, which further reduces the car’s CO2 footprint. 14 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 *Based on Kia estimates. Actual mileage will vary with options, driving conditions, driving habits, and your vehicle’s condition. A CAR THAT EMITS ONLY WATER? Beyond Kia’s EV and PHEV models, Kia is developing a production hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) for introduction early next decade. The culmination of Kia’s five-year plan is its first hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle. Kia’s research into fuel cells dates back to 1998, and includes the 2009 FCEV concept, a large, five-passenger SUV which travels up to 425 miles on a single fill-up and emits only water from its tailpipe. Kia’s next FCEV will feature a fuel stack similar in size to a 2.0-litre internal combustion engine, offering a top speed over 100 mph with a targeted range of more than 500 miles from a single fill-up. Durability tests of Kia’s pre-production fuel cell fleet have been extremely promising, with test vehicles running over 100,000 miles without major issues. Using modern production techniques and high-tech components, Kia plans to deliver a vehicle that meets the high quality standards and levels of innovation that customers have come to expect. ENGINEERING NIRO KIA’S ENGINEERS PUSH THE LIMITS WITH THE ALL-NEW 2017 NIRO. Kia’s newest crossover vehicle ushers in a new era. Pairing Kia’s latest lightweight platform with a next-generation powertrain, the Niro seamlessly blends technological innovation, impressive fuel efficiency, eye-catching looks, and functional utility. “Un-Hybrid” Design With some hybrids, leaving a good first impression appears to be a secondary thought. But the Niro’s impressive style — a joint effort between Kia’s design centers in California and Korea — shows that drivers don’t have to sacrifice looks, space, or driving pleasure in exchange for fuel efficiency. The Niro looks like a sleek, modern crossover, but every aspect of its subtle aerodynamic bodywork — right down to the wind-cheating shape of its side mirrors — is engineered to reduce both noise and drag. Lighter & Stronger High-tech metalwork extends well beyond the sculpted exterior. Engineers incorporated lighter-yet-more-durable Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) — even using it to reduce mass in unexpected elements like seat frames — increasing the vehicle’s power-to-weight ratio. Selective use of lighter aluminum alloys in large panels like the hood and tailgate further decreases weight for improved performance and handling. A More Efficient & Responsive Powertrain In pursuit of maximum fuel efficiency and minimal emissions, Kia developed a state-of-the-art engine exclusively for use in hybrids. The revolutionary 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine incorporates the best of recent innovations: the Atkinson Cycle, cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), gasoline direct injection (GDI), and a long-stroke-narrow-bore specification. A transmission-mounted 43-hp electric motor works in tandem with the gasoline engine to produce a robust 146 horsepower and 195 lb.-ft. of torque. To ensure the Niro doesn’t accelerate like a traditional hybrid, engineers innovated a new six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission (DCT). Unlike “motorboat acceleration” — lots of engine noise and lagging throttle response — common to continuously variable transmissions (CVT) used in many hybrids, the Niro’s dual-clutch transmission responds immediately and smoothly. Located between the front and rear axles, the position of the powerful 1.56-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery lowers the car’s center of gravity, further improving handling and freeing up interior space. Incredibly Intelligent Software Kia’s software engineers outdid themselves with innovations like the ingenious Eco-Driver Assistance System. When activated, its Predictive Energy Control software uses the GPS navigation system to analyze topographical changes along the route — climbs and descents — and computes when to recharge or expend the battery’s energy in order to optimize overall fuel efficiency. Optional technology packages featuring autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, and blind spot detection are equally impressive, while an automated parking assist system ensures poor parallel parkers won’t spoil the Niro’s aerodynamics. With standard Android Auto, Apple CarPlay™, and wireless charging, even smartphone conveniences are intuitively integrated. WINTER 2016 KIA.COM 17 July 2016 J.D. BEYOND EXPECTATIONS All Exploring New York’s iconic weekend getaway in the all-new 2017 Cadenza. Just a 90-minute drive from the concrete jungle of New York City, the Hamptons are a cluster of small communities dotting the eastern end of Long Island as it reaches out into the Atlantic Ocean. The legendary summer destination for urban New Yorkers is ingrained in American culture and, despite stereotypes, the Hamptons are not at all as exclusive as outsiders might imagine. Looking beyond the fictional facade, visitors will discover a treasure of natural beauty and cultural heritage available to all, from unspoiled white sand beaches and fishing towns to affordable antique shops and roadside seafood shacks. 20 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 WINTER 2016 KIA.COM 21 Left: Fore on four. The Parrish Art Museum exhibits notable local artists. Right: Bridgehampton’s historical buildings and modern boutiques are surrounded by bountiful farms and vineyards. SOUTHAMPTON Departing NYC via Brooklyn, the home of the city’s most aggressive traffic, the Cadenza’s Smart Blind Spot Detection system comes in handy, while Android Auto smartphone integration allows Google Maps navigate us around traffic congestion. Soon enough, the stresses of urban living fade as the quiet and powerful 290 horsepower engine and eight-speed automatic transmission delivers us to the rolling hills and pastoral quiet of the Hamptons, past perfectly groomed golf courses and into Southampton. Southampton is the oldest and largest of the communities that constitute the Hamptons. One of its earliest homes, the Halsey House, provides an excellent window into history. Originally built in 1648, it is now a museum with a collection that includes a rare “Breeches Bible” from the 1500s, one of the early English transla- BRIDGEHAMPTON tions of the Bible to introduce the notion of Adam and Eve clothing themselves with fig leaves. Other outstanding cultural offerings nearby include the Parrish Art Museum, showcasing the rich local art history; the Southampton Arts Center, with its busy calendar of community events; and the Watermill Center, an artists’ retreat and exhibition space boasting picnic-perfect sculpture gardens. Though it contains more than its fair share of fine art and American history, Southampton is most well-known for its old money. To see tangible proof of the wonders of compound interest, peek over the hedges at the architectural behemoths along Meadow Lane — aka Billionaire Lane — home to some of the most expensive beachfront estates in the world. Further east, Bridgehampton has miles of beautiful beaches, but its downtown area is best known as the antique hub of the Hamptons. Strolling along the storefronts, it is quickly clear that Bridgehampton may well be the epicenter of the interior design style known as shabby chic. If you’re looking for perfectly polished furniture, you may be disappointed, but if signs of age and character are more your style, you’ll be inspired by all the elegantly distressed furnishings and accessories overflowing from the shelves. Just outside of downtown, stretches of farmland and roadside farmstands quickly take over the landscape. These farms are integral to the popular eateries in the area, which are best known for their fresh, farm-to-table fare. At places like Topping Rose House, menu items list the names of local farms that provide everything from organic arugula to grass-fed beef to heirloom zucchini — not to mention produce from the one-acre, on-site farm. Local wineries also figure prominently, and Wolffer Estate Vineyard — a 55-acre, sustainable, family-run vineyard — has a tasting room with the perfect patio to wind down with a glass of rosé. If you spy someone wearing an unusual hat, you could be looking at one of the area’s polo players — Bridgehampton is the Hamptons’ horse country, and summer polo tournaments attract throngs of celebrities and their followers. 22 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 WINTER 2016 KIA.COM 23 SAG HARBOR & SHELTER ISLAND Just north of Bridgehampton, Sag Harbor takes visitors back to a different time. A popular whaling port in the 18th and 19th centuries, boats still dot the marina, and much of the original architecture — including early colonists’ homes — remains intact. For an unforgettable night’s stay, check into The American Hotel, one of the most revered hotels and restaurants in the Hamptons. Built in 1846, just as the whaling catch in the Atlantic crashed, the classic brick building survived the economic downturn and is now a favored haunt of a certain famous piano man, who just might sing you a song if you’re in the mood for a melody. In the morning, SagTown Coffee is another must-visit for a perfect perk-me-up and fresh baked banana bread. For nature lovers, a quick ferry leads to Shelter Island, an 8,000acre island with vast tracts of protected wetlands — nearly onethird of the island is owned by The Nature Conservancy, in an area known as Mashomack Preserve. It has several easy nature trails where visitors can spy large osprey fishing for dinner. 24 KIA.COM WINTER 2016 Left: Picturesque Sag Harbor is a classic backdrop for modern luxuries. Right: Surfing is riding a wave of popularity in the Hamptons. What better way to enjoy the catch of the day than fresh fish tacos? EAST HAMPTON Known as the “new money” area, East Hampton is among the largest Hampton towns, with beautiful beaches, enormous mansions, historic colonial homes, and plenty of upscale shops and restaurants along Main Street. Elm-lined Main Street is a cool spot for a summer stroll past working windmills from the 18th century down to Town Pond to feed the swans. Want to hang ten? Georgica Beach is the best spot for surfing in East Hampton, but there are no concessions or food stands here, so plan ahead and pack a picnic. For a look at the best of the see-and-beseen beaches, you’ll want to check out Main Beach’s white sands, where you can also salivate over decadent lobster rolls from the concession stand. OUT TO MONTAUK Leaving East Hampton, it’s time to crank up the 630watt, 12-speaker Harman Kardon® audio system, turn on the ventilated front seats, and truly unwind. Although Montauk is technically in the Hamptons, there are many things that set this small town apart. First and foremost is Montauk’s location: locals call it “The End” because it sits on the easternmost tip of Long Island, a gorgeous ten-mile drive from the nearest Hamptons town and surrounded on three sides by water. Beyond its geographical isolation, Montauk is another planet compared to the wealth on display elsewhere in the Hamptons. Forget financiers, ornate mansions, Italian loafers, and polo shirts with upturned collars, Montauk attracts far more regular folk who value quality of life over luxury goods. Still, the area is gaining in popularity and long-time lovers of Montauk worry about the area’s gentrification as buyers are priced out of surrounding Hampton communities; however, there are no chain restaurants or designer retail stores, which helps retain the town’s authenticity and keep tourist dollars in the local economy. Along the perfect beaches, scads of surf shops cater to the flip-flop crowd. Those that don’t surf still get out and enjoy the gorgeous environs, whether hiking through Montauk Mountain Preserve or biking along the Montauk Highway to the oldest lighthouse in New York: Montauk Lighthouse was authorized in 1792 under President George Washington. Climb up to be rewarded with great views east toward New York, north to Connecticut, and out into the Atlantic. If you’re unwilling to spend a mortgage payment teeing off at some of the Hamptons’ more famed country club courses, take a swing at Montauk Downs State Park instead. With famously low greens fees, it’s often called the best public course in the country. After you’ve worked up an appetite with the myriad of available activities, head to the harbor. At the docks, fishermen unload the day’s catch, right next to the legendary Gosman’s fish market and seafood restaurant. Newer rustic-chic eateries like Swallow East offer dockside seats, small bites, and live music. If you want to eat and drink with the folks that caught your dinner, check out the perfectly named Liar’s Saloon, where fishermen share, well, fishing stories. If you fancy a taste of the local nightlife after dinner, pop into The Surf Club, an ultra-stylish boutique hotel offering waterfront rooms, plus a hip restaurant and a bustling bar of beautiful people enjoying a break from city life. Without all the velvet-rope posturing, Montauk has become the Hamptons’ nightlife hotspot as visitors realized that instead of keeping up appearances, they were having more fun in The End. MALIBU BEACH HOUSE KIA REUNITES NFL ICONS BO JACKSON AND BRIAN BOSWORTH TO RECREATE FOOTBALL — AND VIDEO GAME — HISTORY. For the fourth consecutive year, the Kia in Malibu Beach House hosted parties and events last summer, attracting Hollywood celebrities and musical artists alike. BO VS THE BOZ The 1980s gave rise to video games, and no game kept football fans in a trance quite like the state-of-the-art 8-bit graphics and pixelated players of Tecmo Bowl when it came out in 1987. Tecmo Bowl was also the first game to feature real NFL teams and players, but it was not without flaws, including a glaring ingame cheat: having Bo Jackson on your team. The game’s avatar of Bo Jackson was absurdly unstoppable and scored at will. In the 1980s — and since — no one dominated sports like Bo Jackson, whose actions on the field often went beyond what was possible in video games. Considered by many to be the most gifted all-around athlete of all time, Jackson is the only player ever to be named to all-star teams in both professional baseball and football. The most storied moment of Jackson’s career came when the running back faced off against defensive juggernaut Brian Bosworth. “The Boz” was known for his loud personality — including his incessant trash talking and outrageous personal style. In the most impolite terms, Bosworth promised to shut Jackson’s electrifying offensive game down. When Bo and Boz met on the goal line in Seattle during an iconic Monday Night Football game in 1987, they gave fans one of the NFL’s most memorable moments. In the second half, Jackson took a handoff near the goal line and, with nothing but Boz between him and the end zone, bulldozed Bosworth back for his third touchdown of the night. Leaving no doubt about his dominance, Bo set a Monday Night Football record with 221 rushing yards. Bo instantly became one of the most venerated players — and marketing phenomenons — of the era. Perhaps it was only appropriate that Bo was just as unstoppable in Tecmo Bowl as he was in real life. In support of its third year as presenting sponsor of NBC’s Sunday Night Football kickoff show, Kia empowers Bo to reprise his character from Tecmo Bowl with the help of the “MVP of SUVs,” the Kia Sorento. Packed with technology and safety features — as well as dynamic agility and handling — the Sorento offers Bo the opportunity to turn back the clock and dominate Tecmo Bowl opponents (and The Boz) once more, taking viewers inside the game like never before — and having lots of fun along the way.
