Intelligent lightweight engineering is a peak priority in M vehicles. This is because low weight is the optimum platform for the best driving dynamics and exemplary efficiency. Ultra-light materials such as magnesium, aluminium and carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) are used in many components. Active aerodynamic measures are comprehensive and coordinated and optimise driving dynamics, stability, controllability and cooling of M vehicles, particularly at high speeds. Reduced air resistance also improves performance, as well as lowering fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration ensures the alternator generates electricity primarily when the driver brakes or takes their foot off the accelerator. Unused kinetic energy is transformed into electrical energy and fed into the battery. Auto Start-Stop switches the engine off when the vehicle comes to a temporary standstill e.g. at traffic lights or in a traffic jam, to reduce overall fuel consumption. When the driver presses on the clutch (manual) or takes their foot off the brake (M DCT), the engine starts up again in a fraction of a second. Carbon-fibre reinforced plastic roof. As part of the BMW intelligent lightweight engineering concept for the BMW M3 Saloon and BMW M4 Coupé, the roof made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP) helps to reduce the overall weight while lowering its centre of gravity. This increases agility and dynamics when cornering, accelerating and braking. 26 | 27 Innovation and technology Suspension. Innovative systems for more driving pleasure. Active M Differential optimises rear wheel traction and driving stability when changing lanes or accelerating out of bends, when cornering at high speed and on roads with uneven surfaces. Traction is improved via an electronically controlled unit that reduces the difference in revolution speed between the rear wheels. M Dynamic Mode enables the maximum exploitation of lateral and longitudinal dynamic potential for a particularly authentic driving experience. It works by raising the intervention threshold of the Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) system, whilst still supporting the driver in critical situations. Conventional rules do not apply to the BMW M3 Saloon, BMW M4 Coupé and BMW M4 Convertible. As independent productions of M GmbH, they are faithful to the M philosophy and perfectly combine high performance with optimum everyday practicality. To fulfil these high aspirations, the intricately constructed M high-performance chassis has been entirely redeveloped. Adaptive M suspension allows electronic control of the shock absorbers to ensure optimised road contact and traction in any situation. The suspension settings can be adjusted via either the MDrive Manager or a button in the centre console into Comfort, Sport and Sport+ modes. The intelligent networking of chassis components and control systems ensures maximum driving dynamics and agility as well as a high degree of precision and control. M Servotronic varies the level of steering assistance to suit the current speed and, even at high speeds, ensures direct and precise steering responses. Seven-speed M Double Clutch Transmission with Drivelogic, optionally available, is an innovative dual-clutch system specially designed for the high-revving BMW M engine. It provides uninterrupted power delivery during gear changes by way of two sub-transmissions, each with its own clutch, which continuously relay engine power to the rear wheels. M Carbon ceramic brakes, optionally available, ensure braking power is implemented more directly and offer increased resistance to wear, fading, thermal-loaded and corrosion which has a positive impact on agility, dynamics and acceleration.
